Re: What games did Alexander play as a child?

In fact, the type of games are very similar to those played by children up until the 1970s, I would say. Di dthey play Greeks and Persians, like our Cowboys and Indians, I remember soemwhere reading about a game called "bees"..can't remember where..Linda

Re: My thoughts about the sources - continued

Jan Curtius says, in relation to the affair of the Persian nobleman who was executed, that Bagoas influenced Aleander while he was making his body available to the king..pretty explicit. May just be gossip, of course, but he does say it.Linda

Re: My thoughts about the sources - continued

Curtius says Alexander had a sexual relationship with Bagoas - quite clearly. But things can be open to a variety of interpretations, and even the sources are biased, and I do think that the more you read about the culture of the times, then the more it helps to understand - language can be used in ...

Re: I need your oppinions on this

In Greek surely...or Macedonian..Discuss. :)Marylin - I don't really know about whether there was a lot of "promiscuity" then, and polygamy woudl mean that the morality of what was good and bad was different also. But, yes, Alexander was considered restrained. And being bisexual is not a s...

Re: I need your oppinions on this

Re: I need your oppinions on this

Perhaps a better word would be "socially acceptable" behaviour, rather than "norm" even though that is what started the whole discussion. And I would agree, certain social circumstances encourage "romantic" friendships which may or may not become sexual, and there is a ...

Re: I need your oppinions on this

Hi SikanderSexual continum studies - I beleive there is a changing thinking away from the cultural "blank slate" aspect of sexuality and more to genetic factors. But that is also not an absolute indication. There is a lot to be discussed. More than almost anything, it is an incredibly subj...

Re: I need your oppinions on this

I think Sikander once posted something on this which was vey fair, which is that in different socisties, at different time, different conventions and practices were usual/tolerated/encouraged.I would agree with you that I also think that Jeanne's article is perhaps too sweeping in this regard, using...

Re: DVD

Stone said he woudl do that, so he could get teh DVD into schools. I guess American schools just can't cope with that sort of reality... In any case, I thought the romantic stuff was pretty lame anyway...Linda

Re: Calling all those interested in Hephaistion!

At a guess I would say that the survey *might* conclude that school-girl type crushes which create imaginings of slashy type relationships can lead to learning :)Certainly, a teenage pashes on Hephaestion *and* Patroclus led me to read the Illiad, the Odyssey, and Arrian, and Heckel, and try to lear...

Re: Liber de Morte, Polyaenus online

If I had any comment on the site, and it is a great resource, is to echo what Karen said; a brief bio and background to the sources would be helpful to those of us less well up on the lesser known sources.I have just spent this afternoon reading about gold couches, naked flute girls and far flung la...
