New members: Ask a question
We've had a couple of new members who have joined lately who don't look to be the usual spammers. So, in order to generate some activity in the forum, I'd like to invite them to ask a question about Alexander. It doesn't matter how noddy or silly the question might seem, I, or I'm sure someone else,...

Antikythera mechanism solved
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-56377567 Scientists from University College London (UCL) believe they have finally cracked the puzzle using 3D computer modelling. They have recreated the entire front panel, and now hope to build a full-scale replica of the Antikythera using modern ma...

The Golden Lyre by Noel B Gerson 1963
This is principally a novel of the love affair between Ptolemy and Thais, although not exclusively and there isn't much lovey-dovey stuff. It is not what could be called a romance, but it is too historically inaccurate to be called a historical novel. Thais is an ambitious Macedonian serving wench r...

Even the mediator is a fucking loser. lol. Excuse me? You might not have noticed that this is a global site with different time zones I have moderated your posts as soon as I was able. Some of us have lives. You might want to ask yourself which is the dominant world culture, the European as represe...

Re: The inscription of Bahariya temple
Hi Hiphys, thanks for this. I knew it rang a bell so I did a search and there was a Robin Lane Fox which mentioned it. See this post here for a bit more detail http://www.pothos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3946&p=38240&hilit=bahariya#p38240 There is also an interesting thread here http...

Re: Alexander sacked the city of Baalbek?
Thanks a lot for that, Spartan. It makes a lot of sense of course that Alexander would have secured the hinterland for Tyre and Sidon, but knowing where to find the information is difficult.

Fascinating, thanks. It might be Persian but it recognisably shares the same world as Greek art of the period.

Alexander sources website
A good few years ago, Susan Holmes and various others translated quite a lot of the Alexander source documents and posted them all in one place. I quite often used to refer to this site especially for some of the less well-known sources such as Athenaeus. It used to be here https://sites.google.com/...

Re: Hephaiston's death
If Hephaestion was already suffering from a perforated intestine, an emetic could have caused further perforations of the stomach, esophagus, bowl or intestine. However, causing someone to vomit in a weakened state, could have meant Hephaestion choked on his own vomit. That would account for the spe...

Re: The death of Alexander the Great - poisoning hypothesis
Hi, thanks for this. Just FYI, Andrew Chugg didn't come up with the malaria theory. This has been around since at least the early 1970s when Peter Green and Robin Lane Fox were writing their biographies, and they both speak as though it is already a well accepted theory. Peter Green also mentions pl...

Hi. I don't really know what to suggest. Perhaps you could try deleting your cookies as this might reload the software for you. Unfortunately I don't know how to tell you to do this on your tablet.
