Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

ΙΑΠΕΤΟΣ: I totally agree, my point was similar: if it was looters that removed the roof stones, they must have been very lucky to remove the ones that lead to the ramp. So I dont think those holes prove that looting took place. It only leaves the possibility open that looters may have used them, bef...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

I agree that noses are prone to damages, but if e.g. there were things randomly falling from the ceiling I would have expected to see at least sings of impacts and significant surface damages also to other parts. Also, the lips are damaged too, those are less exposed and fragile (to my understanding...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

(once someone else pointed out that the stone missing from the diaphragm wall to the third chamber was actually lying in the second and not the third, where looters would have pushed it) One more point is that there is a ramp connecting the two holes in the two diaphragms containing the 2nd chamber...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

No, the video above is from 2013, and you could see in other press releases that during that time they were specific in saying that they had no clue who the architect could have been. The "1584 Deinokratis" speech is from this year's visit of the PM to the site (other video). Apparently, t...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

Here is one more thing that could be a bit interesting. I was looking for press releases from 2013 (when they were less selective with releasing information), and there is an article e.g. here: http://www.archaiologia.gr/blog/2013/04/01/%CF%84%CE%BF-%CE%BB%CE%B9%CE%BF%CE%BD%CF%84%CE%AC%CF%81%CE%B9-%...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

I also cannot see the monogram, but my understanding is that her point was that such monograms (among other evidence) where used to date the tomb in the latest 4th century BC. There has never been an explanation from the arcaeological team on how they were so certain with the chronology even from 20...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

The bright blue is probably due to wrong settings of the camera/lighting, as discussed in several Greek blogs/forums. You can see that the photography scale is bluish, as many other parts of the photo, especially bottom right. So, I assume the eye is white.

Here is a mosaic of the mosaic using few of the highest resolution crops the ministry released:

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

Maybe some evidence about whether the tomb belongs to a man or woman, this is a blog post by the architect of the excavation from 2013: 400 blocks from around the Lion, belong to the peribolos (perimeter 500m) of the tomb. The blocks were orthostates, stepsis blocks and geisons for a very long circu...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

At least Cassander requested a painting depicting Alexander in a battle with Darius (a copy of which could be the Alexander mosaic), but maybe that is the farthest he would have gone for praising Alexander... From Pliny: Among his pupils, were his brother Ariston, his son Aristides, and Philoxenus o...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

Well, I extracted individual images of the video, added them in some nice autocad online applications and got a rough 3D model of the tumulus, which I hope works for you (it likely wont work if you use Linux). http://bit.ly/1sLlDoU Moving the view point above the hill, you see the periphery of the t...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

Thanks for this reference, but either the summit excavation was abandoned (it really looks like a physical hill in the video) or the shape of the hill was different when Lazaridis was excavating it. The image below is from Goolgle Maps/Bing several years back before any extended excavations by Peris...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

There was a problem with the link, now fixed. I was also about to post that article with the drawing you are showing, but you were faster :D This drawing seems more accurate to me, and it is therefore not unlikely that the caryatids were holding something in the middle. On a similiar matter, the Lio...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

I think that there is a big confusion in the press because the excavation team and/or the ministry of culture are not so careful with the way they release some of the initial interpretations of the findings. Interpretations appear to be presented as facts and are adopted accordingly by the press, wh...
