Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

Were rosettes like those of the Amphipolis tomb also common in monuments from the roman period that Prof. Palagia refers to?

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

Are there maybe parallels with the forum of Octavian? E.g. see a reconstruction here: http://penelope.uchicago.edu/~grout/encyclopaedia_romana/imperialfora/augustus/caryatids.html See also this: http://www.ancientcoins.ca/RIC/RIC1/Augustus/RIC492.jpg and this: https://m.flickr.com/#/photos/mharrsch/...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

There is also a statement from a ministry official that the room behind the 3rd dividing wall, appears to lead to another dividing wall which also has a gap. Access there is still very difficult

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

Here is a photo which is not part of the official release. It comes from a journalist (Anna Panagiotarea) who apparently, thanks to her connections, she is continuously present at the excavation and somehow coordinates press activities... The photo is posted in ther facebook profile (https://www.fac...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

Some photos of the excavation and reconstruction of the Amphipolis lion can be seen at the end of this article: http://www.xronometro.com/amfipolis-sparagmata/ The author of the article questions the statements regarding the lion being originally at the top of the Kastas hill, since as it appears fr...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

Thanks a lot. It did sound as an overinterpretation when I heard it, but I mostly wanted to point the certainty with which she, and most likely many members of her team, associate this structure to Dinocrates.

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

She is actually very explicit in this video (starting at 2:16) when comparing the 158.4 meters of the tomb's diameter with the 15.84 km of Alexandria's perimeter. She even refers to the whole thing as "το μέτρο του Δεινοκράτη" ("Dinokrates scale" or "Dinokratis measure"...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

There is a video here from the earlier visit of the greek prime minister at the Amphipolis tomb: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTpV5_vBd9c It is interesting because in news you could hear mostly the statements from the PM, while here its mostly the bits where the lead of the excavation is speaking...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

Hello, it's been a while. According to the latest info the tomb is possibly unlooted. The latest findings suggest that it is a royal tomb, and not of a general, but that remains to be seen. It's dating (325-300 b.c) along with the other findings surely indicate that it may be the tomb of Alexander ...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

According to the article in the link below, Michalis Lefantzis (architect involved in the excavation) reported that a drawing of the tomb has been identified in a wall painting of a 2nd century BC house that was recently excavated south of Amphipolis's acropolis. http://www.agelioforos.gr/default.as...
