Re: Marcus, and one more thing...

The people from South-Greece who colonized Epirus were Doric speakers, and the Attic dialect was the specific choice for "Hellenization", however, the Epirotes spoke and wrote in a dialect of North-West Greek. If only someone can explain how the Doric and Attic speakers managed to Helleniz...

Marcus,

I would like to ask a brief question:If excavations took place in Russia, in say 1100 years from now, would you be confident in saying that all the inscriptions would be in French, even those that only came from 19th century layer?Kind regards,Jorge

Now you fear punishment and beg for your lives, so I will let you free, if not for any other reason so that you can see the difference between a Greek king and a barbarian tyrant, so do not expect to suffer any harm from me. A king does not kill messengers." - Alexander the Great speaking to Pe...

Re: What is wrong with Slavic invasion theories

you said:"The sites I mentioned, as well as Stybera, Astibo, Vinitsa Fortress, Skupi etc. have existed in continuation from the antiquity (some even from neolitic period) until 4th, 5th, 6th AD and some even into the medieval period. Perhaps what you're suggesting is that there are no new settl...

Re: how he looked

Well, i always assumed from the Pompei Mosaic that he had an auburn to medium brown colored hair. Judging from this detail, and also the part of the world that he was from, i find it doubtful that he had the color of hair that he is often romantically portrayed with(that is light blonde). I wouldnt ...

Re: The Archers in Alexander's army.

I was always under the impression that the Ancient Greeks found the bow and arrow to be somewhat effeminate(sp?) and therefore eastern-leaning or persian leaning. They of course associated effeminacy(sp?) with cowardice, so they associated asians and persian in particular with cowardice. Interesting...

hi ruthaki

i found this excerpt, hope it helps a little for info on ancient ink: Pliny and Dioscorides have given the formulas for the writing inks used by the Greek and Roman scribes immediately before and during their time. Re: Maps

I am guessing that they would not have used parchment/skins because this invetion was not used in the classical world until it was founded by one of the diadachoi kings of pergamum(not sure which one, however) during an blockade on trade with Egypt's Ptolemies. I guess they would have used papyrus o...
