Re: Chiliarch
Well, Linda, we might have to agree to disagree here! The fact that Perdiccas took on the role after Hephaestion's death does not mean that the role was created for Hephaestion to demonstrate to the world how high he stood in Alexander's favour. I agree that there is an implication, but it ain't pro...

Re: Chiliarch
Actually, I think Hephaestion's appointment to chiliarch was for no reason *other* than his strong attachment to Alexander. Hephaestion had been used for some diplomatic missions (such as that to select and appoint the new king for... darn it, I forget where) but all accounts appear to indicate that...

Re: Chiliarch
When you say "relevance within Alexander's schemes" (or whatever it is you say - I can't see the previous message on this forum!) what exactly to do you mean?We do, after all, have a very good idea of the emotional attachment that Alex had with Hephaistion, and he was being promoted to hig...

Re: WELCOME back to the pothos.co.uk forum
I think it's great - I much prefer this forum.I suppose the only issue is that, when I click on the forum, I lose the menu on the left hand side. So, for example, when Sikander said "check out the 'books' section" I actually had to leave IE and come back to the site in order to access the ...

Re: A riddle
That reminds me of the 'theory' (or 'truth', if you ascribe to it) that all the archaeological and geological evidence that disputes the biblical Creation was fabricated by the Devil. If people wish to believe that Alexander didn't exist, that's their prerogative, but if it's true, then someone has ...

Re: Greek speaking town in India
It's to do with Indo-European roots, nothing to do with a modern Bulgarian dialect being spoken in India or Pakistan. Even if the 'Macedonian' that Alexander spoke wasn't exactly 'Greek', it certainly wasn't 'a Bulgarian dialect'. We should not get confused with 'Macedonian' as it relates to the 4th...

Re: Sources
There are two main reasons why we don't have the original sources. First, it was fashionable in the ancient world (as it has been throughout history) to write epitomes and digests of other writers - to show one's literary skills, as much as anything. Hence, for example, we have Justin's epitome of T...

Re: So what is the
The Macedonians of Alexander's time almost certainly did *not* speak a Slavic language, but a dialect of Greek. It was distinct enough from what the rest of the Greeks spoke (as far as we know, and we know nothing about the language for certain) for the Macedonians to be considered "not Greek&q...

Re: Religion and Alexander
I hadn't thought about the Jove / Jehovah (or even Yaweh) connection. I was about to make a point about Indo-European linguistics, but then remembered that Hebrew is a Semitic language... but there might be something in it. Then you started to go on about Einstein and Prometheus... and I reckon the ...

Thanks for that, Sikander. Very interesting - an area I know (or knew) nothing about and, if I'm honest, hadn't spent any time thinking about before.

Re: Religion and Alexander
John, This is obviously a reference to Ammon, though, isn't it? I'm not sure (and I'm *really* not sure - not just tactfully disagreeing with you) how far we can see a synthesis with Jehovah who appeared to Moses in Egypt. It's an interesting question, whether the geographical location of mythical (...

Re: Strength and Weaknesses
Not sure I agree about 'dependence on close friends' as a weakness - as far as I can see none of Alexander's generals let him down. I don't know what my choices for his weaknesses would be (I need to think a lot harder for a lot longer), but I would probably include an inability to gain acceptance o...
