Re: Saturnalian drink
Dave J - I visited Sydney in June 2001 with my wife and sons for 11 days - it was absolutley fantastic!! I truly fell in love with the place. And your local transportation makes Tampa, Florida look like a backwards village. We are looking to a return visit in a few years. Nice to see there's someone...

Re: Death/Invisible Enemy
Ruth and Maciek - I can only echo your "wow's". When I read an interesting string of discussion on certain topics, I like to print the series and keep them for future reference. To occasionally see some of the authors jump into the discussions is really a special treat.

Re: Paper in progress: Alexander's Use of Intelligence Info
Marcus - Interesting that you should mention the Persian contribution. Please see my response to Nick. I hope to get a better understanding of how Alexander may have gleamed from the Persians, as far as techniques of information-gathering. But from my preliminary research already, I believe Alexande...

Re: Paper in progress: Alexander's Use of Intelligence Info
Thanks, Nick. I haven't seen it, but will look for it. On a related note, I just read a short article by a Professor Rose Mary Sheldon (Norwich University), concerning the Persians' use of their postal service for intelligence gathering and transmission. It was in the American Intelligence Journal, ...

Paper in progress: Alexander's Use of Intelligence Informat
Dear Forum Members - I have finally decided to write a paper reference Alexander's use of intelligence information. I believe Alexander was one of the true military leaders who appreciated the art of "knowing thy enemy." As I read and re-read my various sources on Alexander, I have been no...

Re: Pothos offerings at Alexandria
Susan, first of all I am envious of your son. I've only been to the region twice, both times courtesy of Uncle Sam and both times it was to locations about 300 miles south of Alexander's stay in Babylon. Hmmm - maybe disquising the entire US military as students of Alexander wanting to visit Babylon...

Marcus - how does the "Wars of Alexander..." compare to Osprey's Campaign Series - Alexander 334-323 BC (ISBN 1855321106)? I have this second one (by John Warry), but have seen the one you mentioned.

Re: lol, Somebody thinks that Zulqarnain in Quran was Alexan
Isn't most organized religion a matter of somebody trying to interpret morality for us and to decide what is the "true right way"? One of tenets that I appreciate about Islam is the one-to-one connection that exists between a person and their divine power. But it seems that as with most or...

Re: and now for the books - please vote
Nick - For someone just starting to study Alexander, I would definitely include M. Wood's In the footsteps... since it's almost like a "Alexander 101" course (an American description of a basic university course). With its accompanying video, it gives the beginner a good overview. Admitted...

Re: The Iliad, Alex and Hephaestion.
Dean, When I got bitten with the bug to learn more about Alexander, Mary Renault's books were my starting point. I find her writing captures a lot of what it might have been like during those times. At the very least, she gives students of Alexander an environmental setting in which to debate finer ...

New student of Alexander
I am a relatively "new" student of Alexander the Great, although I have been reading about him, here and there for the past five years. I just recently registered with this forum and have certainly enjoyed reading the postings. As I gain more knowledge, I hope to join in more on the discus...

Re: New Alexander Movie
Ah, poor Leonardo, not getting too many votes agreeing with this choice. Look at my response to Maciej M (GÇÿMaciekGÇÖ) for some rationale that it may be a decent choice afterall. Any thoughts on Hephaestion? What about Jude Law - he's taller than Leonardo, as Hephaestion was taller than Alexander. ...
