Re: Editor for Hire . . .

Thanks Marcus and Alexias! I don't necessarily advocate the use of an editor. Everything I do, and everything I've learned, comes from study and practice. Every writer has the capacity to learn the same skills, likely even better than I. But, self-doubt is a wicked side-effect of the artistic endeav...

Editor for Hire . . .

Hey all, I know there's a good many writers who frequent these boards, so I wanted to pass it along that I've hung out my shingle as a freelance editor-for-hire. If you're going the traditional route and feel you need an objective critique and some light editing, or if you're going the indie route a...

Re: Apple Cider Vinegar in Ancient Greece

I wrote to the company and asked them if they knew where their assertions that Hippocrates prescribed apple cider vinegar originated. Their customer service folks sent this back: You can find it in the actual book of Hippocrates. It may be available online or you can certainly find it at the library...

Apple Cider Vinegar in Ancient Greece

I came across a paragraph the other day that made me wonder about something. Bragg Live Foods sells an apple cider vinegar drink ( http://bragg.com/products/bragg-organic-apple-cider-vinegar-drink-honey.html ), among other things, and they advertise it with the following paragraph: "Apple Cider...

Re: Herakles son of Barsine & Alexander?

This is Ruthaki's purview, as well, since her novel-in-progress concerns young Herakles :) But, as to why Nearchos supported Herakles claim: Nearchos was married to the boy's half-sister -- the daughter of Mentor and Barsine.

Family interests and all.

Best,

Scott

Funeral Rites

Greetings, all:

Does anyone know of any specific cultural taboos that would prevent an Athenian bastard (in the classic meaning of the word), circa 463 BC, from participating in the funeral rites of a family member?

Thanks!

Re: NEWLY PUBLISHED NOVEL ON ALEXANDER & HEPHAISTION

Greetings, Lysis! Welcome to the forum. Yes, the key to getting a novel about Alexander the Great noticed these days is to think outside the box -- but don't stray too far beyond its walls. And, if you've not already done so, you really need to read the work of other writers: from Mary Renault to Va...

Re: Child Prodigy, nucleus of novel

But unless you're already someone famous, the chances of a first-time author making it into print are virtually nil. Yes, every year, dozens of unknowns do get their book printed, but many thousands more never get beyond the slush pile. I spent close to a year reading slush for a literary agent. Th...

Re: Child Prodigy, nucleus of novel

I'm of the opposite opinion than Derek. I opted for the hard slog to find a literary agent and then a reputable commercial publisher. By going that route, it's easier to find a readership (which is ironic, seeing how hard it is to get that fair initial reading with an editor or agent in the first pl...

Re: Child Prodigy, nucleus of novel

Marcus, Derek (and anyone else interested), I'm in the early stages of putting together an anthology of short stories (3K-7K words) about the zombies of antiquity :) It's an open call, so anyone can submit, and I'll select the best (most sound research coupled with storytelling skillz and liberally ...

Re: Child Prodigy, nucleus of novel

Glad to know that Memnon has been good for you - in the UK at least. I must read it again, actually! BTW, I must push you for comments on the chapter I sent you of my book! LOL! My UK publisher, Transworld, has been very good to me. They got both Memnon and Men of Bronze out into every bookstore th...

Re: Child Prodigy, nucleus of novel

Not a commentary on the structure or quality, here, but allow me to post a little perspective: based on trying to get my agent interested in another (non-pothosian) author's manuscript of an Alexander the Great novel, if you're hoping for commercial publication you're going to have to make your book...

Re: Child Prodigy, nucleus of novel

I had to go through all the hassle of joining the group (and I can tell you that I came very close to abandoning it, it was so much trouble) in order to download it. Indeed, I belong to enough Yahoo groups and they are tend to be a gigantic pain in the a$$. I rarely post, and only keep my membershi...
