Re: Direction of the forum

There is also the rest of the known world during Alexander's time (and maybe even a little later) although any such sub-form ought to have better name. I know, for instance, that there are members other than myself who share an interest in Thrace. And of course there is Persia and India and more ......

Re: Darius and Scabbards

I used an online Loeb translation by John C. Rolfe, from 1971, I think. I try to use texts that are readily available but would be happy to see a better translation if anyone would like to post.

Best Regards,

Re: Darius and Scabbards

It IS in Curtius, but I confess I had to search it out as I didn't recall it either. Quintis Curtius Book 3.3.2-7 Then, worried as he (Darius) was by pressing cares, he was also tormented in sleep by visions of imminent dangers, whether these were called up by anxiety or (3) by the divining power of...

Re: Did Alexander command the PHALANX at Chaeronea?

I'd be interested in Willekes' rationale and source material backing the "Mediterranean preference for riding stallions". In the work referenced in my previous post, Willekes claims that the Macedonians had this preference. Her only argument is Alexander riding Bukephalos. One horse, from...

Re: Alexander the Great...Good or Bad King, or neither? An Essay

Okay, thank you for the above. I knew the Greeks had no zero but I never really investigated how they counted without one! However, doesn't that mean that a child born in the first month of a year and the last month of the same year would both be considered "one" year old? That would expla...

Re: Alexander the Great...Good or Bad King, or neither? An Essay

Good grief. When people come to Pothos they :expect: to find arguments, debates, disagreements, sometimes heated discussions, etc. Doesn't matter what one calls them and as long as they stay on topic and do not become personal then they have a place here. Is it not possible to actually discuss Alexa...

Re: Alexander's plans for Arabia

Try The Voyage around the Erythraean Sea for information on goods and places of trade in ancient Arabia. The work was written around the first century CE and therefore some of the goods (and places?) were possibly not available in Alexander's time. Nevertheless, I think the info on incense might be ...

Perhaps anyone wishing to revisit the so called "dinner drill" might be better advised to go the 'Taktike' thread . ......only for those interested in the 'minutiae' of the subject and the usual various digressions. For readers generally, I can save them the trouble of ploughing through a...

Re: The Sword of Alexander in the Batman vs Superman film

Nevertheless, I remember an epigram of the Palatine Anthology dedicated to one of Alexander's swords that was kept in a temple. Unfortunately I don't remember the number of the epigram! Have found a reference to a spear of Alexander, but so far no sword. The Greek Anthology Volume I, Book VI, 97 (P...
