Re: Child Prodigy, nucleus of novel

[quote="jan"] I have not read the Mary Renault books on Alexander. I read one which I found preposterous. The book on Bagoas." You may dislike the Persian Boy for its basic assumption (that Bagoas was more important than history gives him credit for), but for a writer, it is well wort...

Re: cavalry organisation

I'm not a historian and know almost nothing about military tactics, but it seems to me we're dissecting the wrong problem. AIUI, the only facts that are undisputed are: * around 1800 Royal Cavalry * split into 8 ilia, each commanded by an officer * split into subunits How did he split them? Well, ho...

Re: help with battle line up at Gaugamela

Yes, it does help - thank you. We're still examining the roles, and therefore most likely *exact* place of each unit. Seeing how others tried to solve the same puzzle helps think outside the box. The most striking difference (to our current layout) is that we positioned "Javelin men, Agrianes &...

I've had a long-standing interest in the theory of narrative structure and would have commented on those aspects (leaving the experts here to study it for factual accuracy on Alexander's life). But I can't come by the document, neither. If you don't want to use Google, just ask for everyone prepared...

Re: help with battle line up at Gaugamela

of course I'll send you photos, but it'll be months before we have anything to show for. we're still in the planning stage and it'll be disappointingly small: only about 180cm * 60cm. also, I think we've answered question (4), at least in part: Fuller, "in his Generalship of Alexander" giv...

help with battle line up at Gaugamela

Dear all, I usually come here for balanced views on Alexander the Great, but never posted before. Now I'm hoping to draw on the collective expertise gathered here: we want to build a scale model of Alexander's army at the start of the battle of Gaugamela, using 6mm wargames-style figures. For source...
