Re: Alexander's height
Hi Gina,My guess would be at least 5'7", but no more than 5'11". This judging by the Alexander busts, and also from seeing other ancient busts in the Archaeological museum in Athens. If he were much smaller than 5'7" is unlikely that he could have been effective as a warrior, no matte...

Re: The Best Version of Guagamela?
That makes sense, as I checked out an exhibition book at the same time that had the same cover as Lane Fox's book. I wasn't sure if they went together though because Lane Fox is not mentioned in the credits or anywhere else that I can see in the exhibition book. Both books have awesome pics, but I h...

According to the Acknowledgements section, he hails from California State University.Selma, California...wherever that is?In his book he mentions that Philip bound 3,000 defeated troops and tossed them overboard to drown. This could be true, but I've never read anything like it.

The Most Vituperative Account Ever Written?
Hello all,I just finished reading Victor Davis Hanson's "The Wars of the Ancient Greeks". It makes Green look like a fawning lamb in comparison. In his book, he pulls out all the stops to denegrate ATG. Wherever there is a myth of Alexander's brutality...he mentions it, and seems also to m...

Re: The river Lycus and Arbela
Hi Susan, Thanks for the awesome pics!!! Arrian provides 600 Stades or 75 miles. Fuller through a modern day field reconassaince pegs it at 36 miles. So I guess the question boils down to how much do we know about the actual site of the battle? How much do know of Arbela's actual location then and n...

The river Lycus and Arbela
Hello all,I'm having trouble deciding which account to use in the distance from Guagamela to Arbela. Is seventy five miles right, or is it as Fuller states...merely thirty six miles? I have expanded my section on the battle by probably 4 times its original length to incorporate and reconcile Hammond...

Re: dear nicator.
Well said Maciek...lest we forget, Arrian actually states something like 1.2 million Persians...no doubt exagerated. The 250,000 is the least no. given by all the primary sources, and it seems reasonable indeed. As far as Herodotus being a liar is concerned...what the heck is Cyrus talking about? I ...

Re: The Best Version of Guagamela?
Apparently, Fuller based his account on Colonel Theodore A. Dodge, Arrian, Plutarch, Curtius, Diodorus, and Tarn. See Fuller's Preface...He based his lectures on Dodge and Arrian alone before writing the book. later Nicator

Re: please
Perhaps you are right. I will edit the post and soften it a bit. Sometimes I get a little irritated when someone provides a viewpoint as ridiculous as that. As far as Delbruck is concerned, thanks for the recommendation. In the meantime, I'll have to go with the voluminous information to which most ...

Re: Angelina Jolie as Olympias, and others cast for Stone fil
Hi, Rosario Dawson is perfect for Roxanne...she has the look. Of Cuban and native American descent. Looking very similar to a modern Bactrian I suppose. http://us.imdb.com/Name?Dawson,+RosarioAngelina Jolie is an interesting choice for Olympias, as long as they are only using her for Alexander's chi...

Hi Karen,I think these homoerotic scenes are weeder scenes to make sure the actors can act. What can be more difficult than pretending to be homosexual if you are hetero?later Nicator

CONGRATULATIONS Maciek !!! Nick-LOL!!!...don't forget that if your niece's father died with no heirs, then you must marry her and by law you must mate at least twice per month (at least according to ancient Greek custom). Otherwise, bring a long sword and cut the bread with her...oh yeah, I amost fo...

Re: Alexander a violater
Hello Stavros,The religion mentioned in Wood's video is "Zoroastrianism". It was named after Zoroaster, and was around 1000 years old at the time of the mythical encounter with Alexander. It exists in some form today in Christianity (believe it or not). later Nicator

Re: Alexander a violater
...hhmmm, if I recall correctly, Darius lost the war. If Darius wasn't such a slack, incompetant, then Persia would have survived in its archaic state perhaps a bit longer. I should think that an army which in the very least outnumbered another by 5 to 1 should have been able to win. Oh, but that's ...
