and now for the books - please vote
Hi Companions - On pothos.co.uk we now have a list of 'recommended books' for those starting or developing their interest in Alexander. The present list is just a mix of books the webmaster already mentioned on the old pothos, and I added a few to complete the provisional top-10. But now I would lik...

Re: Porus - defeated? (revisited)
Dear Susan, Linda & Marcus -Thank you for your support.I never claimed to have any substantial answers to all the doubts and questions, only the personal view that someway something terrible happened at the Hydaspes. After Hydaspes Alexander subdued the Glausae and handed over their territory to ...

Re: To Susan, About Iron Gates of Darband!!
Hi all - Darband or Derbent is in Azerbaidjan, close to the border with Russia. It has been pointed out by some as a possible candidate for Alexander's (legendary) "iron wall" that protected the civilised world against the forces of Gog and Magog. You might want to check sura The Cave. Der...

Porus - defeated? (revisited)
Sorry, missed out on this before, due to holidays. First, the controversial link to "Alexander the Ordinary" has been here on pothos.co.uk all the time: check Battles (Major) in the Campaigns section. Secondly, military history has examples of defeated armies which remained largely intact....

Re: battles
Hi Chris -We have tackled this question before, as I remember. In general, the answer must be: no. As Alexander led the attack, he could only have had a very vague idea about what was happening elsewhere. As I recall, but I should check, the line of battle was considerably longer than a mile, I thou...

Re: Happy birthday ! Time machine?
Hi Chris -I think this deserves a "new message" on its own. Nice idea. I can not help thinking Alexander would go to World War II and see to it that it would remain a 'proper' war, without all the atrocities committed against ordinary civilians. Maybe I am an idealist, but I do not think A...
