Re: The Probable site of Kynoskephalae battlefield 197 BC

Has anyone seen the ninth episode of 'Decisive Battles', the one titled Cynoscephalae, 197 B.C. ? This is the series that uses images from the video game 'Rome, Total War' to recreate battles. I'm generally a little wary of tv shows that try and recreate or even just discuss history as there have be...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

The Millers considered that the geisons of the crowning blocks of the peribolos wall are only consistent with either 2nd century BC or 4th century BC examples, so the form of the geisons appears to exclude a 3rd century BC date for the Amphipolis tomb. A second century date is inconsistent with the...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

The following from chiniapost.eu on March 8th. The famed Lion of Amphipolis statue could not have been placed on the Kastas hill covering a controversial tomb in northern Greece’ s ancient Amphipolis site, specialists said at a congress in Thessaloniki on Saturday, because it is too heavy to have be...

Re: A thing that is happening to pothos- a double link?

The other site is Pothos.com, whilst we are Pothos.org. And I would guess that English is not their native language. :)

Best Regards,

Re: What Happened To Pothos?

Well, I am at a loss. I've just gone back through about ten pages of one of the threads and all I can say (again) is that ALL persons involved have made questionable comments. Should I just delete both threads as it would be almost impossible to edit them given the number of unsuitable remarks and t...

Re: Murder of Cleitus

For a little light relief, here's a poll. Thanks to Agesilaos for making me aware you could post a poll on pothos. It appears that Alexander stabbed Cleitus with the spear, rather than hurling a javelin at him. If he was that close to Cleitus, why did he not just hit him? Alexander's usual ruthless...

Re: What Happened To Pothos?

I also appealed, in vain, for a moderator to intervene to deter the 'flaming'. Guilty again. I'm afraid that as these particular threads became longer and longer and (for me at least) more difficult to follow without backtracking I totally lost the gist of the debates and I admit to just browsing t...

Now if that should happen I will step in no matter how busy I might be because I do know exactly what you are talking about. I would hope that by now our more experienced members realize they don't have to...

Re: What Happened To Pothos?

This requires work from someone, usually the moderators who have an idea of what they want the community to be, to make the community interesting and welcoming. It would be a terrible shame if pothos were to die and those learned people who contribute had no one to share their knowledge and interes...

Re: What Happened To Pothos?

It is the members who make the forum. If no one else chooses to post or start new threads then Pothos will stay like this or fade away like the movie forums of yesteryear. A Pothosian obviously cannot be forced to post or reply to posts, only encouraged. It's up to the individual member whether they...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

The bones are being carbon dated. That should show clearly whether they are original or from re-use of the tomb. Haven't posted anything in a while (although I check the forum several times a day) due to life getting in the way of what I'd rather be doing. :-) At this point, several short posts fro...

Prof Spawforth Youtube on Persianizing/Alexander's use of chariots

Here is a Youtube presentation of a lecture given at the British School at Athens by Professor Antony Spawforth (Newcastle University and BSA Visiting Fellow), the title being, "The King, the Bow and the Chariot: in Search of Alexander." I have only listened to the beginning so far but it ...

Re: Philip's Remains Confirmed. Others in tombs are not!

I find Dr.Killgrove's blog interesting in itself, but she makes some interesting points about these results here . I agree with the above - definitely an interesting blog - but in this case I was also drawn to the response of a reader. Well, "drawn to" is probably not the right expression...

The Buried Statues of War

An older but fascinating article on the hiding of the ancient treasures of the National Archaeological Museum on the eve of the German occupation of Athens, 1941 . The whole article is well worth a read, however, given the findings in Amphipolis this year, I thought the most relevant (to Pothos) par...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

An even bigger problem for a sealing 5+ centuries after construction is the fact that the paintwork survives on the facade beneath the sphinxes (photo below). It is impossible that such paint should survive 5 centuries of weathering. Furthermore there is no sign of differential weathering between t...
