Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
He took the machine developed by his father and fundamentally changed its character and capability by reversing the role of infantry and cavalry. This opened up the speed of conquest and utilized the infantry predominantly as a clean-up force in tow. This was crucial to what Alexander was able to a...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
Hello Amyntoros, At the risk of sounding patronizing, I'd just say that I have several businesses of my own and I can assure you that money can be moved, hidden, and manipulated as necessary (within the confines of the law...or course). And I have no doubt that the ancients were every bit as capabl...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
Hi Nicator: What does Macedonia's wealth have to do with it? These power broker types are international types, perhaps, Persians, Athenians, Lydians, etc... Don't forget that Macedonia was on the forefront of world affairs for some time. And with the centralized political structure and key strategi...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
My question to you would be why are you attempting to bash Alexander for the sake of Philip? Is it your contention that Alexander had nothing to do with the victory at Guagamela? Was is NOT Alexander that devised the battle plan? The rolling box of phalanx designed to face out in all direction appe...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
I don't think Macedonia was rich enough to have that level of "power brokers". And Darius might not have even considered Macedonia any more than a minor pain at that time. Even with Alexander he didn't come out personally until Issus. So who cared enough about getting Philip off the thron...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
Paralus, Excellent reply...though, a bit trite in its own right. That is a little trite. The point is that he led and no Theban thought it better that a "more agile" and younger person should. I note you forewent any engagement with Monophthalmus - a man clearly attested leading armies int...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
It's been a few weeks since I've had a chance to look up and breathe with the busiest interviewing schedule I've ever had. But, alas, a job is finally in the offing. Accursed, I'll begin by posting a bit from the wonderful opening page of Green... "The story of Alexander the Great is inexorably...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
who exactly killed Pausanias? Was it Philips royal guard who ran him down? (Sorry, my sources a nowhere near me, and I can't recall if it was Philips personal guard or another group of men) There were 3 members of the Royal Guard, if I recall correctly. Perdiccas, Leonnatus, and Attalus (son of And...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
Spitamenes, Without turning this into a JFK style mystery whodunit thriller, can someone please tell me who the "power~brokers" "behind the scenes" were? I'm not understanding if its supposed to be real people or if its the proverbial "them", .. like the c.i.a. Hehehe.....

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
Marcus, agree with you, overall, that it is unfair to rubbish Alexander; but I do think we should be careful of being dismissive of Philip, which would be totally unfair to Philip! I have no desire to 'rubbish' Philip either. As I said, I think most pothosians are Philip fans...myself included. My o...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
Accursed (what's up with that name?!), It seems fairly obvious that Alexander was more than a cheerleader. His methods were ground breaking in that he preferred to use breakneck speed utilizing cavalry as the offensive arm over the more traditional method of infantry utilized by Philip. That was wha...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
Accursed, Wow, what extreme consternation over something so ill contrived. Even Alexander would have admitted that his father was, at least partly, responsible for much of what he accomplished. It is common to view the entire genre as the Phil-Alexandrian empire because one could be separated from t...

Re: Tyrants And Perspective
I have recently had the privilege/misfortune of watching a little bit of the pilot for the 1960s TV show based on Alexander. Guess who was playing the lead role? WIlliam Shatner. Or Shat the Great as he was referred to in that context. Everything looks tolerable after that assault on the senses. Th...
