Spell-check and word search highlight for Pothos forum?
Thomas, is there any chance of getting a word search highlight (i.e when using search engine, the words entered are highlighted when results are retrieved). It certainly would cut down the amount of posts one would have to read when searching a particular subject matter. Also, for us poor or perhaps...

Thanks for your response Theseus and Amyntoros. It must have been the Arrian quote on Alexandria that I was thinking of and not Plutarch at all the - thanks Amyntoros. The reason I ask the question is that I've been reading up on some archaeological literature which suggests the Macedon's were more ...

Did Alexander erect any new temples?
I haven't had the opportunity to go through any of the sources, but does anyone recall if Alexander erected any new temples of worship during his campaigns, or rather, do the sources make mention of such activity? I seem to recall temples of Asclepius being mentioned but can't remember if he simply ...

Deucalion's daughter Thyia bore thunder loving Zeus two sons, Magnes and macedon fighting from a chariot, and they dwelt around Pieria and Olympus. [Hesiod frag. 9] This little know fragment has in my opinion received little discussion regarding its provenance. It is one of N.G.L. Hammonds favourite...

Your role in the latter part of the 4th Century BCE.
On a lighter note. I've often thought to my self, had I lived during this period who would I have been. I've tried to put myself in the shoes of an Alexander or a Philip, but in all honesty the shoes just don't fit. I thought perhaps one of the hetaroi, but I'm not real keen on horses - they kinda f...

Re: ATG & Rome
I wonder how much impact ATG had on the ruling class of Rome? I would be grateful for any insights - was ATG a popular figure in Roman political life? We are indebted to Rome's elite for preserving what we know today about Alexander. All five major sources on Alexander were either written by or for...

I'm just stating that the world would be mighty different and weird-looking to us today if Jesus was born under the rule of the Persian Empire instead of the Roman. It's just a weird thing to imagine. Perhaps some other religion could have sprang up in the West . What a peculiar thing to say. Of co...

Good to see the forum back on line, well done Thomas. A warm welcome to Phoebus :D Actually, unless we call Xenophon an out-and-out liar, his story is one wherein his element emerged victorious, whole, and in good order from a battle where the rest of the army lost and was routed. I don't know about...

To throw a spanner in the works (sort of) Pierre Briant in his From Cyrus to Alexander: A History of the Persian Empire says it is possible that a new king did NOT take on the previous king's concubines, and that a new harem was created for him. Sorry but I can't give page reference and actual text...
