Re: Proof

I would mention each of the Alexandrias, burned Persepolis, the heat seared tiles at Babylon, there are decrees and dedications in his name (not many), Chandragupta's being inspired by Alexander. Perhaps the easiest is the money and the Elephant Medallion series.

I'm sure there's more....

It was that statement I answered; and I still stand by it - Alexander was made aware of various issues of his behaviour that some (at least) of his friends/army disapproved of, and he made no effort to change. This is a different point from the one you are now making. 8) ATB But some, if not most, ...

The Persians by Aeschylus

On the page I'm looking at, it says that The Persians was written in 470 bc. That would be nine years after Plataea (probably 8.5 if it were performed in 470). It is my understanding that Aeschylus fought at Salamis, so at least some of the greatness of classical Athens was being formed at that time...

Re: Barbarians

Remember that in the beginning, as far as we can tell, the term barbarian simply meant one who did not speak Greek. There apparently wasn't anything perjorative about it. The line is that the Greeks all thought that other languages sounded like 'bar bar bar' to them. As far as the greek view of Pers...

Re: Reign

It's quite interesting. Aristotle is shown as a behind the scenes bad guy trying to keep Alexander from destroying the world to create a new one, Diogones is a gatekeeper who seems to know what's going to happen, and Plato is...well...Plato. :P Alexander is tall and brunette, Heph is shorter and fey...

Re: Alexander is the point!

"ParalusSimilarly, one must not highlight behaviour of the benevolent conqueror that belies utterly that image. To incontinently plagiarise myself from another thread: It was reported to Alexander that a tribe of independent (my italics) Indians known as the Cathaei was, among certain others, ...

OY!

I agree with you, that it doesnt really matter if they were or were not in such an affair. It matters though when someone bases half of his movie on that, when it is only an assumption. And especially since we are talking about a figure like Alexander. The problem is that your rather vociferous vie...

Pantheon High

This is a little off topic, but I thought some of you might like it (and no, I'm not associated with the book, I just liked it). It's a manga set at a high school for the modern day progeny of the various world pantheons. http://www.amazon.com/Pantheon-High-1-Paul-Benjamin/dp/1598167340/ref=sr_1_1/1...

Best version so far...

I liked the first version, I really liked the directors cut and this 'final' cut is just magnificent. Yeah, it still has the historical problems, but as a movie it finally feels right. I think all should see this cut if they have a chance.

Interesting thought...

The number of casualties probably changes with what your view of the Persian army sizes were. Most of the casulalties would probably happen during the pursuit during the land battles. If you accept ~600,000 at Gargamala, then the casualties would be higher than if you think its ~100,000. If you're f...

I enjoy the taming scene...the close-up of the horse's hooves are a bit much. I also really ejoy the cavalry heading toward the right!
