Re: follow-up rome

Ok, just keep in mind that capital letters are unappropriate for internet pages. Are you writing a novel? Moreover, you don't have to post a new thread for every post. If it's related you can just post it as a reply to your previous one.

Re: Horses and Dogs

Halil, the curved stick-thing that you reffer to, troubled me as well. At first I thought that it's just a stick, perhaps a go-fetch kind of game between man and dog, but then I realized that these men must be athletes and the "stick" must be the tool they used to scrape off the sand and o...

Re: Why Not a God?

I also agree with what Halil mentions. But if you refer to the Elefsinian Mysteries, the insiders were prepared to be honoured in the underworld, not to live again.

Re: Why Not a God?

Why not a God indeed?! In the mindset of the time, one could "become" God by performing extraordinary deeds. And what could be more extraordinary that the total destruction of the Persian empire and the conquest of the whole known world?!!! Surelly Theseus or Castor & Polux (Polydeukis...

Re: Horses and Dogs

I'm sure that they named their pets and animals in generals just as we do today. The most famous dog and horse respectivelly must have been Kerberus and Pegasus!I wan interested to find depictions of dogs in ancient Greek vases, so I visited Perseus. Here're a few of the more beautiful ones: http://...

Re: circumcision

Moreover Greek pottery - preceding Alexander - was found in excavations in Judea. So some short of commercial exchange was happening already since early times. During Christian times and Paul's trips to Greece & Rome he repeatedly had spoken or was accommodated by fellow-Jews in Greek cities (Ph...

Re: circumcision

I'm speechless!
I mean I knew about the Greek influence amongst the Jewish people (even Hanukah is related) but I'd never expected that they could reverse a circumcision back then! Any ideas on the how?

Re: Influence of Aristotle

Further more, on the notion of God-King, this was certainly out of the scope of democratic society but it was tangent to the notion of a hero-demigod, like Theseus or Herakles. Meaning that someone who performed such a task like the destruction of the greatest empire on earth, "had" to be ...

I have read the book and I concur that it is "excelent"! Indeed it brings certain ancient Greek customs and beliefs under a different perspective.

Re: Young conquerors

It wasn't possible at that time for Generals/kings to observe the battle from a certain location and direct the movements of their troops. Once the battle had started, they had no opportunity to affect it's cource, since communications weren't advanced. So if a general chose to sit on a hil and obse...

Re: Ethnicity and Heredity

I absolutelly hate the idea that one person's ethnicity can be decided based on genetics. That was Adolf's idea and we all know where it has led the world!Ethnicity is a cultural aspect. See for example modern day Turks. They have nothing in common genetically with the Hunnish tribe that started off...

Re: Persian or Arabic name of Alexander

Saif, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the word "Roumi" used by the Arabs to describe the Greeks? Do you use the same term for the Romans?Roumi is coming from the Byzantine empire era and was reffering to Greeks, right?Cyrus, it wouldn't make sense to reffer to Alexander as "Roman&qu...

Re: How are Iranians and Greeks portrayed in the Alexander m

Hi Cyrus, As you know, I'm flying back to Greece for work and Christmas holidays soon. Once there, I'll also take the time to see Alexander and give you feedback face to face when I return to Iran, on the 5th of January. Do you think it will be screened in Tehran so we can see it together? :-)Jona, ...
