Re: Discussion on Chaeronea
Paralus, how lovely to see you here again! Very kind. Been about, just involved in other concerns including, but not limited to, getting old, the real world biting and deep dives into Zama and Roman historians. Time to put something back into Pothos methinks. my knowledge of military strategy is li...

Re: Discussion on Chaeronea
It's a very good summation of the evidence, such as it is. Kathy has done a great job of bringing it all together. Several things are apparent. Firstly, Hammond's reconstruction cannot stand. Hammond's ridiculously refused allied line is where it is because of two (typical) assumptions: it must run ...

Battle of the Hydaspes discussion
For those not a member of Academia.edu, there is a lively discussion going on regarding Kathleen Toohey's reworked thesis (something mentioned by Sean Manning a while back). Presently underway is a two part chapter on the Battle of the Hydaspes. . I do not mean to divert traffic from this site, only...

Yes, a very good discussion. Just got through the vexed question of hipparchies. Now for Hydaspes. That will be interesting.

Re: New members: Ask a question
Hey, I'm obviously new here, so I thought I'd ask something. Although Arrian and Plutarch are certainly two of our best sources on Alexander, do they manipulate Alexanders histories to make them more roman? For example, do they accentuate tellings of Alexanders leadership or bravery in order to mod...

Re: Olympia,digital
That is pretty bloody amazing. Thanks for posting Pauline. Happy to say I've been to the site and the museum. We took the drive across from Mykenae (routes 111 & 74) via Levdi and Lagkadia right through what would have been ancient Arcadia. Wonderfull drive through mountain villages. https://pho...

Indeed: I was a participant. Kathy's work is quite interesting. I had noticed :) Kathy's had several chapters up for discussion. Been quite an interesting set of discussions. Hi James, thank you for your post. If the vulgate tradition is not to be replied upon, I think we ought to be equally wary o...

Re: A B Bosworth: Conquest and Empire
No, what he describes is that by the Indian campaign, and increasingly throughout it, Alexander's troops - particularly the Macedonians - had become a well oiled machine long unured to killing. Also very good at it. By campaign's end these men would see killing no different to any other everyday act...

Re: A B Bosworth: Conquest and Empire
The Indian campaigns and massacres are covered in some depth in Triumph and Tragedy which, again, is well worth a read. Having read this one can well understand the nature of Alexander's veterans on display post his death. The eradication of the cityof the Larandians (and Isaurians), the murder of P...

Tomb of Olympias?
From my news feed comes this from The Greek City Times relating the conclusions of Emeritus Professor Athanasios Bidas: Following archeological excavations carried out at the Tomb of Korinos in northern Greece, Emeritus Professor Athanasios Bidas confirmed that the tomb of the wife of King Philip an...

Re: A B Bosworth: Conquest and Empire
Whenever I have a few minutes (not often), I have been trying to read A B Bosworth 'Conquest and Empire'. It isn't a book for novices in Alexander studies as it unconsciously assumes an existing familiarity with Alexander's career and world, but it is very readable and highly enthusiastic. I have o...

The palace at Pella
Interesting article detailing discoveries at ancient Pella including the palace in which Alexander grew up and lived. Somewhat more interesting, to myself, will be the results (eventually) from the work being undertaken tracing and describing the ancient port of Pella. https://www.archaeology.wiki/b...
