Re: The occupant of Tomb III

Have tried not to butt in here where the argument appears to have developed into a "for or against" re Olympias being (still) a Virago in everyone's mind, then and now, and Cassander being misunderstood. I like Carney's assessment of Olympias and see no point in reiterating that here once ...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

I don't recall a date being given for the sealing event itself at any point until now - you were actually convinced that it happened straight after Olympias was buried inside weren't you? I seem to recall a few pages of this thread trying to argue that it looked like the sealing post-dated the buri...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

If so, her date is only a latest sealing date and a distribution of C-14 dates for the remains between 325BC and 168BC is also what you would see if they all actually died around 315BC, because death dates in that range all give modern radiocarbon concentrations which are within the random measurem...

Re: The occupant of Tomb III

Allowing Olympias a 'defence' was a waste of time, from Kassander's point of view - she was guilty of the murders without doubt - and her conviction was certain. I'm not one who believes her conviction was certain had she been able to speak for herself at a trial, or that Kassander believed her def...

Re: ' The lameness of king Philip II .'

Not trying to end the current (and quite enlightening) conversation, but I have been thinking about something else Agesilaos said. If we argue or accept that this quite severely disabled man/skeleton is not Philip, then how on earth did he get into the tomb? Quick research on ankylosis of the knee (...

Re: ' The lameness of king Philip II .'

But we are not talking about ankylosing spondylitis, that is a medial condition as you say, but we only have the ankylosis or fusion, the cause of it is up for debate. Now, you may not be talking about ankylosing spondylitis, but ... ... When looking at the photos, I have some very serious doubts a...

MACEDONIAN LEGAL SYSTEM OR LACK THEREOF

Starting a new thread per Agesilaos' remark below. (Show trial referred to is that of Kassander versus Olympias and the orders for her death.) I think we need to start a new thread on the Macedonian legal system or lack thereof; I will just observe that the fact that Kassandros went through the show...

Re: ' The lameness of king Philip II .'

It could be the normal space but something disjointed the leg and, presumably, lost the patella; had it been present it ought to have become fused in the mass of ossification. One reason to presume that an object remained in the joint is that the bones have not returned to a normal proximity, which...

This is not a court of law. I've had enough of this. As long as I'm (apparently) the only mod active on a daily basis then I will quote Paige: This is MY House. That means my rules. I'm ending this thread and if anything similar - and I mean anything comes up in other threads I will remove the whole...

Re: Olympias and the Katsas Tomb at Amphipolis

This sort of deliberate distortion and misrepresentation of what I said, purely to be confrontational and polemical, is annoying and uncalled for. There is no "distortion" or "misrepresentation", deliberate or otherwise. You decided that the evidence of Trogus/Justin was to be d...

Re: ' The lameness of king Philip II .'

Does this help? (Not regarding the fused femur, but the number of bones.) From Discovery News However, according to Theodore Antikas, author of another study which concluded the bones found in Tomb II are those of Philip II and a Scythian princess, Bartsiokas and colleagues are missing a point—or mo...

Re: ' The lameness of king Philip II .'

I have not actually said that the rape/abduction of Persephone is necessarily exclusively used in female tombs. I have only said that the story of a goddess being carried off into the afterlife would have had a more straightforward interpretation in a female tomb and that Macedonian men in the 4th ...

Re: ' The lameness of king Philip II .'

I think perhaps that you are appealing to modern attitudes to rape in implying that a queen of Macedon would not wish to be associated with a scene alluding to the abduction of Persephone by Hades, but since we know that a chariot containing Hades and Persephone was the principal decoration of the ...
