Re: Amphipolis
I do see your point, especially about the Amphipolis tomb thread. The problem there is, had we broken off to a new thread each time there was a new discovery, item, etc., then we could have ended up with close to a hundred separate threads before the debate finally reached the end! Okay, maybe not t...

Re: Amphipolis
I fully agree, Sean! I have suggested a number of times that threads that digressed into a number of subjects were hard to follow and a bad idea, not least because sometimes interesting stuff was 'buried' in a long thread. I'm all for single-topic, shorter threads...... Then all that people who fee...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
Re.The Shield on the Relief Gepd posted an image of this "sculpture" in early March (the one below is a different photograph) and didn't know the source. System1988 correctly thought it might not be from a Greek museum. I came across it by accident tonight whilst browsing images of terrac...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
The problem with the Kasta Mound archaeologists is not that they have lied, but that they have been economical with the truth. Key facts have been withheld. They seemingly knew about the Hephaistion inscriptions from the start, but said nothing (except possibly to tip off their friends, who have si...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
How often was Dionysos represented in bull form? With aspects of a bull, sure. But in bull form itself? It would seem rare enough. Always more questions with this site. Problem is, with sculpture of bulls we have no way of knowing who the bull is meant to represent! Only clue I have that Dionysos w...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
= Amyntoros' image is of a piece of armour for a man called a 'gorget', worn to protect the throat and upper chest..... Not really sure why you felt the need to explain the purpose of the item/armour. Given that the one in "Philip's" tomb is gold and obviously decorative are you saying th...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
Dancers versus Centaurs? IF DANCERS... I have no dog in this fight except that IF the images are of dancers I reject the assigning of Olympias to the figure on the right. Again I say that, as drawn by Andrew, the representation is not appropriate for Olympias. Yes, his drawing mimics that of the Ta...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
The woman on the right side of the bull is as shown in the images below. Note the huge hips - not appropriate for a man, unless an Amarna king! She is not facing towards us, but away from us and her face is three-quarters averted and glancing slightly towards the bull. She is not scantily clad, but...

A terrible loss - Agesilaos; Karl
We have lost Agesilaos. The world has lost him. I learned that he died yesterday, April 5th. To be honest, I'm struggling for words. Karl was a member of Pothos since 2002 but I never corresponded much with him off the forum until this past year or so, and most of that was me wagging a metaphorical ...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
Quick note to say I now know why witnesses to the same crime often give different reports!! From the very beginning I have "seen" the centaur on the right as being female. Am not saying that my perception is the truth, just that until this moment I had not questioned the gender! Funny. :lo...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
The closest to a unique point is the quote about red belts. The problem there being that it requires Lefantzis to have confused dancers for human torsos attached to horse bodies. And ... the figures are naked above the waist, the one on the right being definitely female, therefore the painting cann...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
The Nike of Samothrace dates to c.200 BC dated from shards beneath its base; it, however lacked a trumpet and, of course has no connection with the Mysteries of Samothrace beyond the geographical coincidence. It is in fact still disputed whether the Nike of Samothrace was erected by Demetrios Polio...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
The Nike of Samothrace stood on a ship's prow. I repeat what I have suggested before: this mural is a scene from the Mysteries of Samothrace. Could well be, although the scene(s) cannot be of the "mysteries" themselves, which were not to be spoken of by anyone and certainly not written do...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
....or just several dismounted cavalrymen?.....still, no point speculating at all, until if and when some more recognisable bits of the frieze are identified.....and of course, we must keep in mind that the frieze may not be contemporary with, or associated with, the tomb in the side of the mound.....
