Re: The Failure of Persia

I saw this one in the bookshop: if you live in the euro-zone you'll pay 109 euro's for it (and I don't think its more than 200-odd pages or so).nick

Re: Fed Up With The Arguments For Persian Displacements

Hi Kenny --Thanks for your input. Indeed, suggesting that Alexander's army was an example of loyalty, while the Persian army had to cope with nothing but unreliable levies and mercenaries, is a gross simplification. Thank you for writing your bold posting, putting things in the right perspective.Com...

Re: it's one of the best questions

Hi Kenny -Don't apologize. This is one of the best questions ever.Muslim rule over the Middle East started after 632 A.D., the year the prophet Muhammed died. Muslim faith and Arab dominance spread from down south, from Makkah and Medina (now in Saudi-Arabia). Mind you - this was 1000 years after Al...

Re: Alexanders moving city

As we can see from Xenophon's anabasis, this was not really the way the Persian empire handled invasions (or rebellions). In Xenophon, after the indecisive battle of Cunaxa, Artaxerxes reminds the Greeks that they're now right in the heart of enemy territory, surrounded by enemies. So the strategy i...

rewriting - about his birth???

Hi Companions ---I am using the Xmas holiday to edit a few paragraphs which really need a restyling. Now this is the pothos.org paragraph about Alexander's "Birth":"Legend says he was born on the same day as the Temple to Artemis at Ephesus (one of the seven wonders of the ancient wor...

Re: The top-10, until now

Hi Jona, hi Tre ---I would argue that people who look at the list are very well capable of deciding for themselves if a certain book fits their needs. Like now, there will be short additional texts indicating if a book is 'general' or 'specialist'. Then we only need a Top-10 (or Top-12) of VERY good...
