Re: Alexander IV Aegos

From Hammond: In one version of the legend, Perdiccas was led by a she-goat to the spot where he was to found his city, which he called Aeg...

Message deleted - if you want to know why

I've just deleted a message about the modern state of Iran. It didn't help the general harmony of the site, and I don't think that it improves the general study of Alexander, who was more tolerant than many of his era. From my viewpoint, there is no 'right' in any of this, but insulting other people'...

Re: Roxane and Alexander's marriage

I've got a photo of a tapestry from the 1600s or 1700s of the marriage of Alexander & Roxane. I'll post it later today when I've scanned it. I've no idea where the tapestry is, or when it was made; someone from Pothos posted the photo to me years ago. It's quite nice, though.Susan

Re: Spitamenes

JonaWas this the cuneiform tablet that we both touched when we went to the British Museum last Thursday? If so, it's very exciting - and it's very kind of you to tell us.Two weeks ago I was walking in Apamea, the Syrian town named after Apama, Spitamenes' daughter. I couldn't take any photos as I wa...

Re: Finally - the end!

Hi Linda AnnThanks for a very interesting set of postings - there's plenty to think about. Off the top of my head, I can think of a few other evidences for the improved role of women after Alexander:1) Amastris, niece of Darius III and one-time wife of Crateros, had coins minted with her image when ...

Re: Alexander's tsunami

Hi Manny, it's Susan. Arrian has an account of the flash-flood here."On one occasion, when the army bivouacked, for the sake of its water, near a small brook which was a winter torrent, about the second watch of the night the brook which flowed there was suddenly swelled by the rains in the mou...

I've got the Naomi Mitchison as well - but it's rather bloody at the end isn't it ? She wrote a children's story of Alexander, too.Susan

Re: Why Not a God?

Damis the Spartan said, when the question of divine honours was under debate: 'Since Alexander desires to be a god, let him be a god.'
And Demosthenes said "All right, make him the son of Zeus -- and of Poseidon too, if that's what he wants." Susan

Re: A tale of Iskander Zul-Qarnain from Sri Lanka

This was recorded by my friend Patrick Harrigan, who runs the Kataragama DevoteesGÇÖ Trust and has devoted his life to the service of the Kataragama shrine. You can read more about Kataragama at http://www.kataragama.org. I met Patrick through the Pothos forum; sitting in the HajjGÇÖs courtyard list...
