Re: Your DUTY!

OK, maybe you've convinced me. Mind you, I've yet to persuade my mother that he's not "Alexandra the Great" . My invariable rule for telling if an author is reliable is to look at their description of Roxane - if she is described as Darius' daughter then the author doesn't know his stuff. ...

Re: FAQs about the movie and Alexander

TimI admire your intentions, but does anyone take the film seriously enough to question its historical accuracy ?I've spent the last hours looking at the reviews on rottentomatoes ( http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/alexander) and it seems so bad that I fear it will sink very rapidly ( it's now at 16%...

Review, continued

There are a few references under the Arab rulers, then the Renaissance brought renewed interest in locating AlexanderGÇÖs tomb. Interest in the topography of ancient Alexandria has grown since then, partly spurred on by Napoleon. Modern archaeological discoveries are adding to the pictureA key point...

Andrew Chugg's 'Lost Tomb of Alexander the Great'

I've recently read Andrew Chugg's book, and here is my review:To quote from the blurb on the back of the book:GÇ£The disappearance and fate of the tomb of Alexander the Great in Alexandria is among the most momentous and tantalising of all the mysteries we have inherited from the ancient world. Gene...

Re: Murder in Babylon

The Historia was apparently translated by John Selby Watson sometime in the 19th century & published by Bohn, according to the reference in Graham Phillips' book. I can't find any trace of this translation online. However, I did find this: http://www.real-crime.co.uk/Murder1/DOCW.HTML#Watson,%20...

Christmas get-together, UK

As it's coming up to Christmas, what about a Pothos meeting for the Brits? I think that there are several of us with easy access to the West Country - for instance Bristol, Stroud - so if anyone wants to meet, let's set a date and time.Susan

Re: Murder in Babylon

I may have done Graham Phillips a dis-service - he has told me that he will send me details of his Historia source soon. Once I receive it, I'll publish details here.Susan

Re: Murder in Babylon

Actually, it wasn't as much the details of Alexander's death as the other quotations from the Historia - e.g. Roxanne's (his spelling) visits to the Hindu Temple of Skanda in search of rare drugs & medicine. Now, I've been looking at connections between Alexander & Skanda, and I've not come ...

Re: Aelian's VH - part II

Book 12.64 Alexander, son of Philip and Olympias, lay dead in Babylon GÇô the man who said he was the son of Zeus. While his followers argued about the succession he lay waiting for burial, which even the very poor achieve, since the nature common to all mankind requires a funeral for those no longe...

Re: Aelian's VH

Passages from Aelian3.23 ...The following behaviour of Alexander was not good. On the fifth of the month of Dius he was drinking with Eumaeus, they say; then on the sixth he slept because of the amount he had drunk. During that day he was conscious only long enough to get up and discuss with his gen...

Murder in Babylon

I've not been on the forum for the past few weeks, so this topic may be covered already - but I've just seen Graham Phillips' book Murder in Babylon, which purports to be fact - and I was astonished to find how full of fiction it is. As the author can't really tamper with Arrian, Plutarch etc, he ba...

Re: correction --- error

Curtius (4:10) has more detail : that she fell ill due to dejection and the rigours of travelling. I think that it was, possibly, originally described as a 'woman's ailment' or some such term, and this was read by later writers as being due to pregnancy, where it may just have been a general illness...

Re: Story: Alexander wanted his body thrown in the Euphrates

It's from Arrian, chapter 7, v 28"One writer has not even been ashamed to record that when Alexander perceived he was unlikely to survive, he was going out to throw himself into the river Euphrates, so that he might disappear from men's sight, and leave among the men of aftertimes a more firmly...
