Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

Thank you, Callisto, I could not get a link to the article only live journal; still does not look Roman to me, the damage does look seismic though, time for caution with a capital C; still no clear evidence but let's hope they do not risk life, limb and, site due to public pressure. Pauline, please...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

I am a bit confused. The original reports suggested that there were 3 chambers, which I took to mean that there were 3 burial chambers. However, the latest press reports seem to be refering to what is beyond the lintel as chamber 3 ie the space between the sphinxes and the caryatids is chamber 1 an...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

This Caryatid seems to be more archaic (or better archaistic) than the ones on Athenian Acropolis. Isn't it? Yes indeed, they are archaistic, and- entre nous- not so "beautiful" they seem...i don't know...provincial and " massive" . Reminder:All this decoration paintings , sculp...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

It could be Nearchos but there are the rodakes that refer to a royal tomb, and the size of it. I do not think that the rossetes are a sign of royal tombs- they tend to be a very common decorative element in ancient greek art. As far as the tomb's size is concerned, the only thing can say is that af...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

It is clear that the caryatids on the throne are not exactly the same as the caryatids in the Amphipolis tomb, but they are nevertheless caryatids: Diana King referred to those on the throne as caryatids in a post about the sphinxes on the throne before the caryatids at Amphipolis had been found an...

Here is a relevant article in English: http://en.protothema.gr/amazing-new-findings-in-amphipolis-two-caryatids-adorned-the-tomb/ The combination of Caryatids and sphinxes reminds me of the Siphnian treasury at Delphi. Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

There is a video here from the earlier visit of the greek prime minister at the Amphipolis tomb: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTpV5_vBd9c It is interesting because in news you could hear mostly the statements from the PM, while here its mostly the bits where the lead of the excavation is speakin...

Alas this is the typical hole of the looters .Always a small one-pressing business. The question is what they left.
