Re: What did GÇ£being GÇÿGreekGÇÖGÇ¥ mean in Ancient GÇ£Gree
Hi VaskoI do agree with you: Debating in a friendly manner is one of the most exciting opportunities this forum gives us. It contributes to the expansion of our knowledge concerning ATG and the history about him. You are also right to defend your point of view and debate with me if your opinion diff...

Re: What did GÇ£being GÇÿGreekGÇÖGÇ¥ mean in Ancient GÇ£Gree
Hi companionsI have been following this interesting thread and what I realised is that our point of view is influenced by modern times. "Greekness", "Greek" are terms introduced in more modern times. There were no passports or nationalities like today at the time we are investiga...

Re: Alexander merchandise
MaciekA good medallion with Alexanders head on the one side and the vergina star on the rear is the old 100 drachma coin. For non-commercialized/ non-souvenir items you can find in all the jewellery shops of Thessaloniki. Alexander is their favourite theme. you can find presse-papiers, medallions ec...

Re: Alexander's failures
Hi Aren!In my opinion the greatest failure of Alexander was that he didn't leave a successor, somebody that all the empire would turn to after his death. Of course it was relatively early for him to start thinking about these things, but all his other actions show a very organised person with a clea...

Some thoughts
Hello NicatorIt is true that they were skillful and ruthless warriors (the title Agrianes it is suggested that derives from Agrios = wild/ferocious). During the sieges though (especially Alikarnassus and Tyre) they were used to protect the mechanics and later for the first attacks. Imagine an Agrian...

Re: Deification
DeanATG did the same campaign as Dionisus before him. Dionisus was deified so accordingly ATG should. We shouldn't forget that the passion for "hysterophymia" (the reputation of a person after his death) at these times was a very strong incentive.Panos

Re: The Royal Guard and Agrianes
Hello everybody!I would say that the Agrianes were more flexible and adaptable units (sth like special ops of modern warfare). Actually they were used to get the "dirty job" done p.e every time there was mountains to climb for a surprise attack. In most of the battles were in the same flan...

Re: Alexander-¦s tumb
Hey Marcus! About Caracalla: He saw a mummy in a glass sarconice personus. Mummies even with the technology of today is difficult to maintain and to do a reconstruction of their original shape. Also the tissues that give us the characteristics have a great percentage of water. The dehydrating proces...

Re: Alexander-¦s tumb
Hi MarcusEven before the generals were loooooong dead and their kingdoms crumbled to pieces (and Caracala was even born) there is no mention of them disputing about the body. I do not think that they would move it 500+ yrs after his death but they could have done it looooong before. For example Cass...

Re: Alexander-¦s tumb
Hi MarcusI do agree with the sources and I was just doing a speculation. This is what led me to do so:The historical evidence indicate that Alexander was to be burried next to his ancestors. The caravan (by Perdiccas) that was transporting the body to the homeland was hijacked (assaulted??) by a mil...

Re: Alexander-¦s tumb
Given that the Macedons had a great respect for their Kings it is highly probable that the body was moved to the Necropolis of the Macedon Kings in Vergina. Of course I am only speculating but I couldnt find any source denying this possibility.Panos
