Re: Alexander shut out at Oscars
Well, can you blame them? It didn't deserve anything. Crap crap crap. It will become a by-word for rubbish - like Plan 9 from Outer Space. In fifty years, students will hold Alexander theme nights, wearing blonde wigs. Linda

Re: hephastion
Hmm - but also I think he was man enough to face his mortality. He wasn't deluded into thinking he was a god.Linda

Re: hephastion
The Oxford Classical Dictionary has a good summary of the erastes/eromenos model - under "homosexuality" - it discusses how much was expected by social convention, and how in private things may have been different, and discusses the evidence for this. I think it puts sexual behaviour in it...

Re: hephastion
Plato's Symposium refers to Achilles and Patroclus as lovers. Not quite Alexander's time - but just before. In the Symposium, there is also speculation about their roles - Achilles was assumed to be the erastes, as he was a King, but there is some provacative speculation that he should have been the...

Re: Alexander Cool as a Cucumber akin to Marcus

It wasn't serious, just in case anyone thought it was..And in any case, I don't wear blouses - jumpers are far warmer, and you don't need to iron them, something that Alexander I am sure appreciated.

Re: Current debates
Aw - there was a fight and I missed it. I have just caught up. The Persians were big girls' blouses, I hope we can all agree on that. Is that too much to ask? Jan - there is a new series of programmes by Michael Wood, on myths and legends - the first was on the Queen of Sheba. I think the others on ...

Re: Steven Pressfield's Research
Maybe it was a a bad interview, and the interviewer got it wrong.Or he is like Just william, and falls in love with his own stories until he thinks they are true. They were brutal times, but I was reminded of Callisthenes today when listening to a programme on the radio about Guantanamo Bay - if some...

Re: And that's that.
I agree - I think that people will be less interested in Alexander, that fewer people will want to make (or will get funding) to make a film, or will get books published. It's a shame. Linda
