Re: Alexander sculpture
It is not necessarily that the modern seller wants to make some additional money representing the piece as depicting Alexander. It's quite possible that the original buyer,

Re: help with translation
Thanks a lot to everybody for their suggestions and additional explanations. As I said, I don't know Greek, but many languages sometimes skip a letter when another form of the word is created so hiphys' suggestion about laphyra being the origin of the laphria makes sense. This way the description co...

Re: help with translation
Thanks, Alexia, I know about the festival. :) Returning from my trip to Greece, I decided to create a FB page "Modern Geography of Ancient Greece" and my first post yesterday was about Kalydon (of the Boar Hunt fame) and the temples of Artemis Laphria and Apollo Laphrion. At the site I was...

help with translation
Please, can anybody tell me how τὰ Λάφρια translates from Greek into English. I found one translation that means "light" but it doesn't make much sense in the context.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Aristotle's tomb(?)
I came back home yesterday. It was an absolutely fantastic trip. I actually stayed 3 full days in Macedonia (Naoussa). I day I spent in Mieza and visited some nearby tombs, another day in Pella and another day in Vergina. I cam back with a lot of impressions and photos. Now I have to work on my trip...

Re: Aristotle's tomb(?)
Hopefully, the association with Aristotle is more than 2016 being declared the year of Aristotle due to 2400 anniversary of his birth. Coinsidently, one day before this article in Greek reporter, i was in Mieza. :) There was a lecture in Mieza's ancient theatre for archeologists/historians that came...

What a terrible loss. So sad. He responded to one of my questions a few months ago and I never found a moment to thank him, thinking I will do it later.
He will be so missed here. Condolences to his family.

Philip in Lefkada (Ionian island)
I realize that the subject is more suitable for April 1 post but still.... Long story short, this May I am going to Greece and will be in Epiros. Planning the itinerary, I considered if I should visit Lefkada - after all Dorpfeld argued it was the real Ithaca. Then, reading upon the history of the i...

Pauline, I also want to add that I enjoy your posts tremendously. And though I can't translate from Greek to English, I will happily post anything in your name if you just email it to me.

Typical Argead features?
One of my Google alerts pointed to the coin of Amyntas III, grandfather of Alexander. I followed the link, curious to see how the Macedonian pre-Alexander coins looked like. Here is the link http://www.ebay.ca/itm/231637490981?rmvSB=true (please scroll down for the images of both sides of the coin)....
