Re: Have archaeologists discovered the grave of Alexander?

I'm partial to Ruthaki's 'Vatican internment dream' theory. If it's possible that his corpse has been interred and preserved, Few other organizations that I know of would have that kind of longevity or will to carry it out.

Nicator concedes to Xenophon's perspicuous detail. Nice job. And thanks for that methodical rendering.

Re: The rival accounts of the siege of Halikarnassos

In regards to the physical capabilities and coastal requirements, I'm well aware of the limitations of ancient vessels. That's why I said the dominant fleet would hug the coastlines and force the disbanded fleet into treacherous waters. This was a postulation in contrast to the accepted theory that ...

Re: The Golden Mean by Annabel Lyon

Hello Jan, Thanks for such an enlightening review. In general, I've avoided venturing into the murky waters of historical fiction because it has a way of perverting the facts in my mind. That being said, my viewpoint on the genre is that good historical fiction is comprised of facts interlaced into ...

Re: The rival accounts of the siege of Halikarnassos

Hello Agesilaos, In regards to the theory that ATG's ships, if indeed kept, would have hugged the coast for protection...Taking it for the 'sake of argument only' that Diodorus was accurate, it seems plausible, and in some cases probable, that the more likely scenario (for the bulk of the retained f...

Re: Article on "Ancient Ways to Predict the Future"

Hello Agesilaos, Thanks for posting. The diviner Peithagoras, being involved in each divination, might have been subject to some inquiry concerning his uncanny accuracy and choice of subjects. Other than that, one wonders, particularly a modern stock chartist, just how accurate these individuals wer...

Article on "Ancient Ways to Predict the Future"

All, http://www.robert-temple.com/articles/Odyssey_Superstition.pdf Check out the link and read down a few pages. There's a reference to Caesar and Alexander having received bad omens from the entrails which showed a lobeless liver. Though I remember reading it, I'm not around my sources at the mome...

Re: Have archaeologists discovered the grave of Alexander?

If his body had been returned to Macedonia it would have been buried at Aigai in the Royal Tombs. And history points out it was seen in Egypt at the time of Caesar and Cleopatra so this is very unlikely. (I had a dream once his body was taken by the Romans and is somewhere in the Vatican and then s...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander

I forget where I read that...Fuller maybe? Read which? Regardless, there is 'perhaps' some bit of truth behind it as the phalangytes appeared to be relegated to 2nd class roles with the elevation in status given to the cavalry under ATG. This I would qualify by pointing out that this is how the ran...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander

A PM will have done lad: no need to have your email all over the net!! Got it now how 'bout you do an edit and remove it? (Yes: I know I'm a recidivist old fart but those who don't need to...??) I've done it for him - I agree it's not a good idea for people to leave their email addresses all over t...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander

[I'm glad to hear it Paralus. I think I've got to add, for the record, that I'm not sure I understood you correctly regarding Chaeronea. Perhaps you were thinking of another discussion? The one I was referring to had to do with Philip's decision to let Alexander participate in the battle, and Alexa...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander

Yes...Alexander made some good decisions too. But how many ancient leaders that most people would recognize as "great" made as many comparably disastrous decisions as Alexander? How many leaders were able to bring their empire to the level that ATG brought his and consequently 'had' to ma...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander

You and others give Alexander credit for the Macedonian victories, and I don't. That's the difference. I don't think it's unreasonable to think that Alexander was intelligent if one thinks he was crucial to the Macedonian victories. The argument is fallacious; not to mention circular: I do not beli...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander

Also, we need to argue on the same footing here concerning what Macedonia was by the time of ATG's end. Originally, Macedonia was a small polis north of Thebes. North of Thebes Macedonia might have been; a "small polis" it never was. Yeah, I didn't think you'd let me get away with that de...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander

Marcus, Of course, the Greeks didn't have sophisticated accounting methods like today (and it's silly? to even mention it). But I STRONGLY disagree regarding the manipulation of apparent wealth via income/expenses, and asset/liabilities. There was then as now, many ways to manipulate wealth (and wh...
