Re: Forum email

Thomas, I'm not sure exactly what you mean here. If you are talking about checking the box that says "Email me when someone responds to my post" then it hasn't been working for some time now. At least it hasn't been working for me!Linda Ann

Re: movie - alexander's palace

I really, really want to like this movie. I'm hoping it will be a huge success and prompt some of the audience to study the real Alexander - a definite possibility given that I just read a news item from Australia where a documentary on Alexander beat out their two biggest reality shows in the ratin...

Re: Was Alexanders Life full of tragedy

Thanks Linda - I really appreciate this reference as Salazar's book (I've been spelling her name incorrectly!) is specifically concerned with battlefield surgery, and there is nothing that can really help regarding treatment of Alexander's illnesses. (She has used 105 primary and around 500 secondar...

Re: Was Alexanders Life full of tragedy

It's been a long time since I read The Invisible Enemy, but I don't remember anything about opiates. I checked O'Brien's chart on the positive and negative effects of wine and he doesn't mention its use as an analgesic. As well as literary works, Salazaar researched all the ancient medical sources su...

Re: Was Alexanders Life full of tragedy

Opiates wouldn't have been used in the treatment of Alexander's wounds. There are only two mentions in any ancient sources of analgesics being used relative to a wound - and both of these are topical applications. Opium, henbane, and mandrake, were considered dangerous and not to be used "unles...

Re: Alexander and debt

While doing an unrelated web search, I came across a site with a dissertation on "Athenian Naval Finance in the Classical Period: the trierarchy, its place in Athenian society, and how much did a trieres cost?" Of course it isn't completely relevant to Alexander's naval preparations before...

Re: Alexander and debt

Most interesting Karl - thanks. (Also to Smitty and Andrew.) I've often been curious about monetary details such as campaign expenditures - as in how much did it cost per soldier for the entire period of conquest? However, I've never pursued a line of questioning as it seemed unneccesary - after all...

Re: Alexander and debt

Do you think the celebrations before departing for Asia could have seriously shrunk the treasury? Diodorus talks of the tent that could hold a hundred couches, lavish sacrifices, dramatic contests, and a nine day festival where Alexander "entertained great numbers in person besides distributing...

Re: Donald Trump's Alexander the Great Suite

I have a feeling that all anyone would find for their $259 is this from:http://benbrowder.net/history.htm"THE TRUE STORY OF ALEXANDER -- Premieres 4th Quarter, Three Hours --He was the greatest General the world has ever known. In only 32 years of his life, Alexander changed the course of civil...

Re: Three questions

It's possible, Marcus, though I rather suspect the statement is more a product of poor research! :-)I just found a website with an essay on the Macedonian phalanx and cavalry which says "The addition of a white linen cuirass, an open-faced iron helmet and, most importantly, a 20-foot sarissa re...

Re: Three questions

Unfortunately, we will also get to see Brad Pitt's Achilles done up like a black leather-clad Xena. I suppose it is better than the TV version of Helen of Troy that portrayed Achilles as a bald, muscular "wrestler" wearing what looked like a dhurrie with braces attached! :-)Linda Ann

Re: Three questions

S'okay. I'm quite happy with the right answer to the wrong question! The book I was quoting from did specifically say that Alexander was the first "man" to wear an iron helmet, but if anyone does find any reference to a Greek wearing an iron helmet before Alexander, I'll offer thanks for t...

Re: Three questions

This is my day for thanking everyone on this forum - I really appreciate the Aelian reference. I have followed the previous discussions on Alexander's eye color, wounds, and illnesses, but I hadn't made the connection about the lung wound being doubted. (This is possibly the focus of the chapter in ...

Re: Three questions

Actually, the second website is perfect and answers my question! I did a quick followup search and found out that the excavations were made in 1988 and the skeleton with the iron helmet nearby was found in the debris of the fortification wall of the lower city of Sardis which was destroyed by the Pe...

Re: First question

Way to go Andrew! And thank you. This description makes much more sense than anything I could work out from Arrian, though I'm still wondering why they didn't just dump earth and rocks directly into the ditch - unless, I suppose, the trestles were also a of a great height.Linda Ann
