Re: Descendants of ATG's soldiers in Pamir

I would also be interested in any website with further information. I don't know anything about this particular traveller/researcher, but there is a website: http://www.myrtos.org/lalo2.html by a musician, Yannis Manolidakis, who had travelled to these areas to do research on the music of the people...

Re: A trilogy of books

I also hated the novels and couldn't get past more than a few pages at a time - I just posted a similar comment in a thread on a different forum. However, many people do like them. The books are extremely popular in many countries, and you will even find a positive review on this forum. Don't feel b...

Re: What Became of Parysatis?

Justin has a reference to Barsine's death in Book XV. He says:""Afterwards, lest Hercules, the son of Alexander, who had nearly completed his fourteenth year, should be called to the throne of Macedonia through the influence of his father's name, he (Cassander) sent secret orders that he s...

Re: A bit of info

Wow, thanks Andrew - I'll look forward to my inheritance! :-) Seriously, I'm glad I could help. I hope the book lives up to its promise, as $44.95 is quite a large investment in a single book. All the best,Linda Ann

Re: About Hephaistion...

I bought a copy of Jeanne Reames-Zimmerman's dissertation on Hephaistion, and the same story is mentioned in chapter 8. She gives reference to Lucian (63.8) as being the source of the story. :-)Linda Ann

Re: I am totally... confused... ???

How about a thread entitled "Post all movie comments here!" When it runs off the bottom of the page, you could start another one. That way, there will be a place for those who want to discuss the movie, without multiple threads pushing historical discussions into the archives. You could al...

Re: Treasure is Mixed Blessing

Hello Nick:National Geographic of March 1990, Vol. 177, No. 3, had an article on the discovery of this golden hoard. It was written and photographed by the Soviets who found it. There are 23 pages with drawings of the clothing, a map; numerous beautiful photographs of the jewelry, weapons, the golde...

Re: Did Ptolemy build Alexandria?

Yes, but they are implying that building didn't start on Alexandria until 317 B.C. Alexander laid out the plans in 331, so there was plenty of time to establish the city before he died. (I read somewhere that Deinokrates was the architect.) Im not supporting this book's claim, but if Alexandria *was...

Did Ptolemy build Alexandria?

I have an old book that I found at a tag sale recently - Volume 5 of a series called A History of All Nations. There are over 16 contributors, PhD's, University professors and the like. It was published in 1915 by the Grolier Society in London, and this book squeezes the entire history of the Near E...

Re: ATG Trivia continued...

Hello again Nicator:I'm not going to disagree with you! Any writer looking to say that Alexander was bipolar could "find" evidence - that's why I gave the list as an example of what they might look for according to today's known information on the disorder. And obviously some writers have ...

Re: ATG and the mystery of the elephant medallions

I first saw Holt mention the medallions in his article Alexander the Great Today: In the Interests of Historical Accuracy, where Holt is refuting Bosworth (in Alexander and the East) who said:"In a manner unique to ancient coinage he (Alexander) was sending a message to people who could never h...

Re: Alexander's ring

Augustus so admired Alexander that he wore a signet ring with the image of Alexander's head upon it. The story about his visit to Alexander's tomb is that he bent over to kiss the face and broke off Alexander's nose!!There is a website on biblical matters where the writer claims: "And, in the M...

Hello Marcus:I'm pleased that the information is of interest. The end of my previous post didn't make it on to the forum - I *still* haven't learned to check after posting. I said that this could easily cause debate, but I take no particular stance, and I am not a mental health professional. I would...

Re: ATG Trivia continued...

Hello Nicator:I'm pretty sure that the authors mentioned have considered Alexander to be manic-depressive. The difficulty as I see it is - how does someone separate symptoms of the illness in a man who was in such a position of power? How could a psychiatrist recognize grandiosity, for instance, and...
