Re: A brilliant morning at Delphi III

The internet was a military secret when I went in '88; whatever the Greek is it bedeviled my every step; still enjoyed it, though

Re: A brilliant morning at Delphi III

Krateros died early to mid spring, c May 320 fighting Eumenes, the previous year he had campaigned against the Aetolians and been in the area of Delphi. I too have been to Delphi, but due to keeping my camera in a leather bag the shutter stuck and all my photos look like night shots; at the time i w...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Good digging, Gepd; however, these are not really the same sort of ‘letter cluster’. There is some connectedness, as in cursive handwriting, but the letters are distinct rather than conjoined in monogram style. The dating of one group (Euarchou [good government], Lysimachou, Megalokleou) ought to be...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Something interesting emerges from the article; the dam is Byzantine, which period is where we do have examples of the type of letter cluster found on the blocks. The poor spelling,if 'Hephaistionos' was intended, and the crude inscribing might be explained by a Byzantine soldier making his mark and...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

I fear that your speculation about the margins being re-cut is invalidated by the fact that the margins on the loose blocks are simply too battered and eroded to make a judgement. And yet you are making a judgement  The point must remain open. The inter-relatedness of human populations is not...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

The comparison which needs to be made, and which the Millars could not make, is between the measurements of those blocks still in the peribolos and those dredged from the Strymon. even so it would not be conclusive. Once the blocks had been delivered to site the 'parelabon' would soon have served it...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

The overlay in red with the pi restored is Andrew's, Gepd. The block behind shows no features and may have been cut down too after removal. Good work sourcing the photos though Tapho.

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Photos can be found here https://www.academia.edu/22242910/Proof_that_the_Amphipolis_Tomb_was_not_Built_for_Hephaistion I tend to agree with Gepd's interpretation, i.e. the blocks were cut after being moved to the Strymon; the evidence is the lack of any 'drafting' on the leftmost edge whereas those...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Look no further than Andrew's hypothesis; the evidence such as it is points later for the the tomb on stylistic grounds (sandal type and finish of the marble, the developed pebble mosaic etc) but nothing is precise in the area of 'style'. The coin evidence puts the monument as early as 316 at the ea...

Any chance of posting the picture or giving the reference where it is to be found?

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

You seem to be confusing ‘evidence’ with ‘proof’, Andrew; the inscriptions most certainly are ‘evidence’ and though they are not proof, the mention of ‘the Tomb of Olympias’, and it can hardly be restored otherwise due to the standards forms and the metrical imperative. Nor does he bury his belief t...

Re: Ear - Springtime for Arrian...and Diodoros

It is about time to get back on this but before launching in I thought I would just put Anson’s arguments out there, this is from ‘Alexander’s Heirs’ the Amazon preview, it is still a bit pricey for my pocket. I will be incommunicado for the rest of the week so I thought it might be useful for other...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Interesting interview with Corso; a good example of the rivalries within the Greek archaeological community and the pitfalls of a closed hypothesis, there are several leaps of faith here
