Roman Medals

Post by system1988 »

Hey all

Two roman era medals, 2nd half of 4th AD. Their front depicts Alexander as a young Heracles followed by the inscription "Alexander Magnus Macedon". On the back side Olympias is depicted on a bed shaped like the back of a dolphin. The snake with which she is going to conceive Alexander (according to a novel of that era entitled "Life and Times of Alexander the Macedon") approaches her from the left. Inscrpiption: "Olympias Regina."

The second medal depicts Alexander that is remminisent of hellenistic era art, on the back side Alexander kills a barbarian while riding a horse, the defeated person's shield can be seen among the horse's feet. The inscription writes "Alexander Magnus Macedon"[/b. From the Tomas Hagg book "Den Antika Romanen".

The final photo of the one medal is added as a comment to this post due to the number of attached files limitations.
