Sacred Band of Thebes

Post by jan »

Do any of the sources give a description of the Sacred Band of Thebes as they appeared at the Battle of Charonea? Do any of the sources tell of their means of defense? Thanks in advance.

Hi Jan,

I can't actually access the sources at the moment, because I'm on a different computer, but the references to Alexander's defeat of the Sacred Band are:

Plutarch, Alexander 9.2
Plutarch, Pelopidas, 18.5

Off the top of my head, I can't remember what Plutarch says in "Pelopidas", either.

However, there isn't really anything in the way of description of the soldiers, but you can assume that they were armed and armoured the same as any regular Greek hoplite. You'll have to do your own research on that, I'm afraid - at least at the moment.

All the best,
Marcus

Thanks, Marcus. I checked Plutarch. Appreciate the help.
