Re: For the attention of Andrew

Re: Rank other ancient generals
Karl! What about Brasidas and Gylippus or even Lysander? Brasidas nearly won the Pelop War by himself. Agesilaos was a gret general, no doubt and he sure showed how soft Persian defense was. But he did bring about the political and military reforms at Thebes that spelt death to Sparta. For that Reas...

Re: For the attention of Andrew
Thank you for your support, Karl, Thalestris, Aengus and Nick. It is nice to be appreciated or at least supported by you guys. Marcus, you are conspicuous in your absence. Now to you Andrew my friend let me address a couple of things. My last post may have been boring to you, however if I recall corr...

Re: Amateurs attempting Gaugamela
I'll bite and its not the first time you have over stepped the mark. The down under coment I believe was directly aimed at myself or Dr Minor Markle either way I feel tremendously offended. Dr MArkle's research into Sarissas over the last 30 years has brought forward many facts that other scholars t...

Re: What's your favorite piece of Alexander memorabilia?
I have the Mosiac everywhere, on my Wallpaper for my computer and about 12 copies of it at home. I also carry a 100 Drachma Greek coin from 2000 (last time I was there) to remind me of my own child Alexander more so then ATG. I don't suppose he counts too, if so then he is my favourite piece of Alex...

Re: Who's buried in the Tomb of Vergina?
I am sorry if I appear harsh I am merely trying to be brief, that may make me appear rude. I mean no offence. I thank you for the link. I know archaeologist take time to surrender ground or even to publish for that matter. we are still awaiting the publication of ostka found in the agora of Athens f...

Re: Who's buried in the Tomb of Vergina?
Hi Ruth,Of course thats what they are going to say, as I said in my oroginal post they are convince no matter what the science that it is Philip and maybe not just for economic reasons. Who is going to want to see the tomb of Alexander's idiot brother? have spoken to many classicists and archaeologi...

Re: Who's buried in the Tomb of Vergina?
I think everybody but the Greek Ministry for Tourism is convinced that it is not Philip. It could be Arrhidaeus or somebody else. Who really knows, I personally think that it is Arrhidaeus.

Re: the meaning of basileus
G'day Marcus,Crickey mate! I think you are mistaken about the term Imperator. It could be applied to any leader as a honourific title for winning a victory but did not necessarily stick. I think from memory Pompey was hailed imperator once in his 20's and then another 6 or 7 times. I can't recall ex...

I have a copy in Long Play Pal BG. If you are in Australia or England you are in luck. I may be able to get it converted to CDR or DVD but it would be a bit of pain.

Re: the meaning of basileus
KArl,I don't like to take you on because you are usually right. Please find below the definition of Basileus as lifted from the Liddel and Scott. Please note that Homer used the word for judge or captain (as I suggested head man), further more Yiannis if you note Herodutud used the term to describe ...

Re: the meaning of basileus
Yiannis, I know what a Tyrant is or was. Some Tyrants were actually a reasonable solution to a poltical situation and were not always the evil image we percieve them to be Piesistratos for example did more to establish Athens than almost anybody else. And before that sparks debate, Cliesthenes, Solo...

Re: the meaning of basileus
kaibasileus if I am not very much mistaken would translate directly as and king. Now I think everybdy would agree thats silly. Furthermore Czar or Tsar etc all stem from a Latin term Caesar after non other then Julius Caesar. This term was a cognomon meaning hairy but later associated with the Empor...

Re: the meaning of basileus
I thin there is a bit of contention on this one, from memory the Ancient Greek for king in actually Wanax which is spelt with a digamma. The Letter disappeared from use during the dark ages and therefore the word could not be used. From my understanding and i am prepared to be pumbbled by somebody l...

Re: NEW pics from the set-I'd say the best so far...
on of the pictures is the famous wall frieze from Persepolis so it mst be Persepolis. I can't beleive how bad the equipment is. Is rather depressing when we consider the whole package. A blonde Alexander, Art Garfunkle as Ptolemy, Sarissas the size of small trees, a script that look like a Mills and...
