Plutarch - Morals #2

PLUTARCH'S MORALS ETHICAL ESSAYS TRANSLATED WITH NOTES AND INDEX BY ARTHUR RICHARD SHILLETO, M.A. How one may discern a flatterer from a friend We must also observe another difference in the resemblance between the friend and flatterer. The true friend does not imitate you in everything, nor is he ...

Plutarch - Morals #1

PLUTARCH'S MORALS ETHICAL ESSAYS TRANSLATED WITH NOTES AND INDEX BY ARTHUR RICHARD SHILLETO, M.A. On Education For silence at the proper season is wisdom, and better than any speech. And that is, I think, the reason why the ancients instituted the mysteries that we, learning therein to be silent, m...

Re: ALEXANDER IN A CHURCH OF 16 CENTURY NEAR AIGAI

Fascinating, thank you. Apparently the church was built with materials looted from Aigai. I found a couple of links in English https://www.christianityart.store/blogs/blog/a-great-church-unesco-monument-opens-its-doors-to-the-public-after-decades-of-stillness https://en.discoververia.gr/the-church-o...

Plutarch - Sayings of Kings and Commanders - Philip

Plutarch - Sayings of Kings and Commanders - Philip 1. Theophrastus has recorded that Philip, the father of Alexander, was not only great among kings, but owing to his fortune and his conduct, proved himself still greater and more moderate. 2. He said that he must congratulate the Athenians on thei...

Plutarch - Sayings of Kings and Commanders - Alexander

Plutarch - Sayings of Kings and Commanders - Alexander 1. While Alexander was still a boy and Philip was winning many successes, he was not glad, but said to his playmates, “My father will leave nothing for me to do.” “But,” said the boys, “he is acquiring all this for you.” “But what good is it,” ...

Plutarch: On the Fortune or the Virtue of Alexander 4

Plutarch: On the Fortune or the Virtue of Alexander But one might grow weary in the enumeration of these matters by which Alexander is shown to have made the most honourable and the most regal use of his authority. And even though he became great through Fortune, he is even greater in that he made ...

Plutarch: On the Fortune or the Virtue of Alexander 3

Plutarch: On the Fortune or the Virtue of Alexander Yesterday we forgot, it seems, to remark that the age of Alexander had the good fortune to produce both many artistic achievements and many men of great talent. Perhaps, however, this was not part of Alexander's good fortune, but rather that of th...

Hi, thanks for your input. The initial page is designed to draw people in and the subsequent pages will have a more text-based and flatter navigation - once I can get the responsive HTML to work.

Re: Alexander the Great fell ill at Tarsus (all sources)

Sorry, Adam, but I am going to have to disabuse you of the seriousness of pneumonia. This is the case history of a real person. X had pleurisy as a child, which left scarring on his lungs - not extensive. In 1960, X caught pneumonia and was off work for six weeks. Despite being a smoker, X was never...

You can find the original Greek for the Arrian passage quoted by Adam here https://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A2008.01.0530%3Abook%3D2%3Achapter%3D4%3Asection%3D7 and subsequent pages. Re: Alexander the Great fell ill at Tarsus (all sources)

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately I am not convinced. So I hypothesize that Parmenion wanted to kill Alexander before Issus because he wasn't sure who was stronger, the Persians or the Macedonians. Also, Parmenion probably didn't like Alexander's risky tactics which might have endangered his s...

Re: Alexander the Great fell ill at Tarsus (all sources)

Alexander trusted Parmenion completely. While he was in Bactria/Sogdiana, he left Parmenion in Ecbatana in control of his supply lines, with the Treasury, and 10,000 troops. The worry was, what would Parmenion do when Philotas was executed. Philotas had 6,000 cavalry in his command, and if Parmenion...

Re: Alexander the Great fell ill at Tarsus (all sources)

But there was a report that Darius tried to poison him. And this is what I think happened. He was poisoned but not by Philip the Acarnanian. He was probably poisoned by Parmenion. I'd rather make a new thread about this. I think we need to see some detailed reasoning behind this to believe a furthe...

Re: Alexander's Last Days: Chronological Source Rearrangement (without the poison narrative and the romances)

I think we can all agree that Alexander pushed himself physically very hard. To quote Ryan Reynolds, at 19 you're made of rubber and magic. But at 30 you are not, some of that elastic is wearing thin, particularly if you have repeatedly been pushing your endurance, as well as coping with constant pr...
