Re: Gedrosian Gesture
Indeed, it does help. Thanks much. I'd love to have that hanging on a wall.

Gedrosian Gesture
I've seen a fantastic painting or drawing somewhere on the web. It shows Alexander dumping the water offered him by his soldiers from a helmet into the sands of the Gedrosian desert. Has anyone seen this picture? I don't know who the artist is or the provenance of the artwork, but it has always impr...

Re: Alexander the great is ALBANIAN
It seems that Tarn is an excellent source on Alexander but the book is near impossible to get. Having not read it, I can only say that JFC Fuller, whose Generalship of ATG I'm now reading, goes to him a lot but, in doing so, corrects many errors in Tarn's battle analyses. I don't know about his bein...

Re: Great Commanders Magazine
I saw it at Borders and grabbed it. It looks like it's published by the History Channel, but I can't tell if this magazine is published regularly or if it's just a one-time capitalization of Alexander mania. There are good maps and pics in it and it has a nice "centerfold" of a map of Alex...

Re: reply to leonard
Hi, Alejandro:Your point is well taken. I may have overstated the role Koine Greek played at the time of the birth of Christ, and I think you are correct when you say it was more a language of the middle class than that of the military, government, and so forth of the Roman Empire. Take a look at th...

Re: Alexander
I find your post objectionable on a number of levels, Michael, but let me just touch upon what I believe to be the most powerful legacy, albeit indirect, of Alexander of Macedon, aka, the Great. The Apostle Paul states, "...but when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth his Son, mad...

Battle of Gaugamela
The Battles That Changed History by Fletcher Pratt has a homepage at http://www.bundy223.net/~andyb/prose/pratt.html#top. Pratt's 1956 book lists Gaugamela as the first in a list of sixteen battles that changed Western history, and the webbie has typed each chapter in rich text format that downloads...

Ignored Book on Alexander
I was wondering if any of you have heard of, see, or read "Alexander the Great" by Lewis Cummings. According to the book blurb on the back cover, "Cummings was a cartographer for the British Intelligence Service when he first traveled through the Middle East and Asia. His biography of...
