Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
Now you've got me totally confused because I don't know who is saying what. The "reconstructed" images on the right are definitely Nikes - who is it that says they are sphinxes? I can't view the video of the freeze for some reason, maybe because I don't do Facebook. As for the figures on e...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
I agree Andrew, it is straightforward to refute that, but I dont think Lefantzis and other go around forums and the social media taking requests and answering them. . . Agree, and to support your remarks there's the following from an Archaeology and arts blog which quotes from the conference. First...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
Sadly much of the commentary they've released about this site seems more intended towards 'politics' (of all types). Think it's long been commented on in this most lengthy thread. And politics are still being discussed. Here's a blog post on the subject which I wasn't sure whether to post or not. I...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
I don't think people are merely questioning the origin of the relationship of Olympias with snakes. It's more your conviction that where there is a snake it must mean Olympias, as if there could be no other reason for the portrayal of a serpent. If you don't see this as an indication of confirmation...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
Neither would I describe Cassander as a teddy-bear. He was clearly a vicious and deadly individual. However, he had to operate within the political realities. Antigonus and the other generals required him to respect the succession of the royal family, because they were not prepared to see Cassander...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
The inscriptions suggest that Alexander's agents had paid for the blocks, in which case they would have been "crown property". So we are looking at re-use in the next major project sponsored by the Macedonian Royal Family, which is also significant, because it means that the tomb should r...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
... ...Therefore the Amphipolis tomb is the grave of another immensely important individual who died within a decade or so after Alexander's death and has nothing to do with Hephaistion. The tomb has been dated that accurately? To within a decade or so after Alexander's death? Not being facetious -...

Re: Philip in Lefkada (Ionian island)
Unfortunately my books are in semi-permanent storage pending another (much?) later move so I can only give an educated guess here, but there is some implication on the web that Lefkada was an ally of Athens at Chaeronea. If so, Lefkada would have technically suffered a defeat against Macedonia, and ...

Re: Statues of Alexander and Hephaestion, National Museum of Athens
Evidently no comprehensive search has been performed by Stewart (or his reference on the matter: Comparanda , Morrow, 1985). Now, this bothers me somewhat - a statement conjured from thin air that not one but two academics failed to do a "comprehensive search" regarding a subject in which...

Re: Statues of Alexander and Hephaestion, National Museum of Athens
Stewart's argument seems to be that he has not noticed such boots in 4th century BC artworks, but that is not a sound argument, because absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. I'm afraid I must disagree. Absence of evidence is normally a sound argument and is certainly used in academic deba...

Re: Statues of Alexander and Hephaestion, National Museum of Athens
Regarding the boots, although Stewart expresses his opinion in a very forthright and confident fashion, the wearing of flip-flops does not in itself exclude the wearing of wellington boots and there appear to be plenty of counter-examples where exactly the same open-toed boots with flaps etc are wo...

Re: ' The lameness of king Philip II .'
In fact, I should very much like to see the subject of "The date of the assassination of Philip II and accession of Alexander the III " split off at my post at Mon Dec 21, 2015 5:27 am and become a separate thread. The first part of my post down to: "With so many uncertainties, any a...
