Re: Dancing with the Lion: preorder is open
There's at least one other person in your shoes. I just posted notices on my social media. I contacted Riptide, things look as if they are fine on their end, and I know of at least one person who HAS received his/her copy. But they asked if you have NOT to please contact them directly, so they can g...

Re: Dancing with the Lion: preorder is open
It should be released before midnight tonight. That's ebook. If you ordered a paper copy, then it'll come by mail, although I'm not entirely sure. It *should* have been mailed to arrive today, but I'm not entirely sure. (Riptide has been very unclear about ordering paper copies in advance, including...

Re: The Date of Alexander's Birth
Andrew, from what I understand, the Harvard folks already allowed for all those issues. They looked at the new moon in July of 356, as Badian asked, and calculated 6 days from that, arriving at July 19th. No need to worry about various calendars if you're starting with the new moon using our modern ...

Re: The Date of Alexander's Birth
Exactly, Sean. It's a muddled mess. Pick a date, any date.... (Not quite, but.) Well, any date except July 20. ha.

Re: The Date of Alexander's Birth
FWIW, some decades ago, Ernst Badian went over to the Harvard astronomy department, and asked them to calculate when the 6th of Loos would have been, in 356. Turns out it was July 19th. (This is somewhere in a footnote in one of his 200+ articles, ha. I'd thought it was in his "Greeks & Mac...

Re: Pella tombstone
My student, Ann Haverkost, is currently working on an excellent thesis about Macedonian tombstones. Obviously, I don't want to post her conclusions until it's been defended, but I hope (and believe) she will be publishing some portions of it, and some of her conclusions.

FWIW, there is also a second interview that I did with Patrick Garvey for Ancient Heroes, available here:

They cover somewhat different questions. (Malcolm had seen Patrick's, so they didn't overlap.)

Re: Historical inaccuracies
Thank you for your answer ' I actually consulted several Greek -speaking friends ' '' Then choose your friends more carefully" Well, considering a couple of them are colleagues and have PhDs in Greek/Macedonian history and teach at unis there, I did consider carefully. I stopped reading when i...

Re: Historical inaccuracies
From the author's note (at the end of book 2): "Regarding the dialogue, Classical Greek is an elegant language, conversation impossible to render accurately without sounding stilted. This left me with two choices: write something that would send readers into fits of giggles or adopt a more mode...

Re: Dancing with the Lion (novels on the young ATG)
Thanks, Alexias. As noted, I'm trying to see if the only people who got the "wrong" cover (not the one they wanted) all pre-ordered. Right now, that's what it's looking like.
Anybody else order the hardcopy (not ebook), and if so, which cover did you get and when did you order it?

Re: Dancing with the Lion (novels on the young ATG)
Excellent. Glad to hear that. I emailed them yesterday evening, and they've already got it fixed, so that's wonderful news. And I'm glad you got the cover you wanted. Out of curiosity, when did you order it? Was it a pre-order or did you order it after it's official release on July 1? (I'm trying to...

Re: Dancing with the Lion (novels on the young ATG)
Moving back to this one. The novel has been out for a bit, and if folks are interested, there are several reviews on Goodreads, all from people I don't know, so don't worry, the deck isn't stacked with "friends and family." Ha. The current aggregate is a 4.32, nothing below 3 stars, but ob...

Re: Power causes Brain Damage?
Hi, Sikander. Sorry for the slow response (book stuff). In any case, I think you make some good points here, particularly about differences in how one came to power between now and then. I definitely don't think Alex was a psychopath (although I think some of my colleagues might argue that point, ha...
