Re: Hephaestion's Relief
The inscription says: "To the hero Hephaestion from Diogenes"... 4) Diogenes, who dedicated the relief, was, most probably one of the 10.000 veterans of Crateros who made it back to Macedonia Of course Diogenes is a perfectly familiar Greek name, just as “Smith”, or “Tailor” or “Baker” or...

Hi all!! The text that follows was posted by me in a more "fans-of-literature" yahoo group but I thought it deserved a re - post here as I think you may find it interesting as well. I am sure that you are all aware of the inscribed Hephaestion relief located in Pella Museum. This relief is...

Re: Pergamon Replica
System1988, Just out of curiosity, what is average pricetag on these copies? The official and unofficial? Is there a big difference in cost because someone buys an official copy rather than an unofficial one? Im sure there is some difference. But id just like to know if its a substantial one. And a...

Re: Pergamon Replica
Systen1988, I always understood that in Greek tourist shops you could differentiate museum replicas by the metal seal attached. However, when you are young, don't have much money, and can't get to the museum shops, cheap tourist replicas seem wonderful, and I still love mine! Same thing applies whe...

Re: Pergamon Replica
In Greek museum shops they sell casts of the Pella head, Akropolis head, Olympia head, Pella statuette, the little heads from the tomb of Philip, the relief with Hephaistion. These don't appear to be available online, but courtesy of the wonderful system1988 I have just acquired full-sized replicas...

Re: Philips sources.
The only time I've ever read anything that has to do with Philip of Macedon has come from our sources on Alexander. Is there any other source not involving Alexander that would have information on Philip? Something contemporary to Philips time or within a few hundred years of his death? The two mai...

Re: 300 suits of armor
And about the inscription,.. Alexander refrained from using the words "King Alexander" and instead chose to use, "Alexander, son of Philip". I think that says a lot about how he wanted the Greeks to see him. Less the tyrant, more the Leader. It probably seemed more paletable to ...

Re: 300 suits of armor
Marcus said: An intriguing question. The reason why I doubt that it had anything specifically to do with Leonidas is the fact that the panoplies were sent to the Athenians. I think that he could not have sent the armors to Sparta either way. He sent them to Athens who was Spartas greatest arch rival...

Re: About the King of Sidon
Well, Alexander seems to have had an international fame as an extremely elegant man. I imagine a table of his full of perfumes and him applying the perfumes of the king Abdalonymus and thinking "hmm excelent, this fits for my drinking party tonight!"

About the King of Sidon
I would like to report to all of you about the existence of an bilingual inscription from Kos island (Aegean Sea). I do not know whether this has been posted already or if some of you may already know about what I am going to say. Its rarity made it impossible for me to resist posting it here. I unf...

http://www.archaeology.org/online/features/alexander/tomb.html try this link; it ought to calm your fears of conspiracy.
