Re: ' The lameness of king Philip II .'
If the Greek Ministry of Culture says in an official statement that the bones were articulated, I would tend to give them the benefit of the doubt. They would be in a position to know the facts. You're going to trust a bunch of bureaucrats who might have no training in history or archeology, let al...

Re: ' The lameness of king Philip II .'
...The skeleton was articulated, so had been deposited with flesh still in place. The *knee* was articulated, or rather fused together. From what I'm seeing in the full PNAS article and its supplementary material, no, the rest of the bones and fragments were NOT "articulated". There was a...

Re: Own an original Alexander - if you're rich enough!
It is true that it is kind of disturbing to know what else is there in lock-up depriving us of its viewing pleasure. There are many antiques out there for sure but if we do not have the money then only photos serve as our only source of enjoyment. As I understand it, a good 90 percent of all antiqu...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
So, are those *floor slabs* across the top of the photo? ABOVE what looks like a door? Presumably not! Either the excavators are doing strange things, or you got some pretty wild brazil nuts there...gepd wrote:...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
Thanks, Andrew, I appreciate it! So it's basically my "Option 3", the floor slabs originally covered the cist grave completely. I have no problem with that, it's just frustrating that the archeologists *never said so*. That seems to be the rule for this dig, though I realize it's a complet...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
...I agree that the cist grave is a different phase, but there appears to be no evidence to contradict the view that it slightly antedates the main tomb construction. Somebody important died suddenly at Amphipolis in the last quarter of the 4th century BC and was given a hurried cist grave burial. ...

Re: What Happened To Pothos?
When the weather warms up a little more I'll get some photos of myself in my new Macedonian sarissophoros kit and post them. I'll need as many people as possible to ooh and aah over me, ha! Yeah, I actually try to keep up with those 2 big threads, but they're pretty much down to "No, you said&q...
