Re: Horseback riding in the Hellenistic Era
Greetings, Good discussion. As an equestrian, I would like to point out that, as indicated through mention of Indians and Numidians, non-bitted riding can be done with hakma (the inspiration for the modern bosals and hackamore), bosals, hackamores, cross-unders, cavessons/sidepulls, lip ropes, and s...

Re: My novel "Shadow of the Lion"
Greetings Ruthaki, Please keep us updated on your book; there have been good suggestions on how to publish outside of print, and I know some writers are finding success that way. Though many of us prefer print, we also recognize it *is* perceived as a dying form (which is tragic). I look forward to ...

Greetings Amyntoros,
Was glad to read you are well- I wondered how you were handling the storms. I suspect globally everyone is starting to ask what steps might be taken in future to prepare for such occurrences....
Welcome back!

Re: Did Alexander dislike ugly people??!!
Greetings, Good discussion to come back to after a long absence! I agree with the others- I am afraid that when you read modern historians, you have to read with an understanding that most writers have a tendency to "interpret" character without much to back it up- Green does this in a big...

Re: Re-writing my Novel on Alexander
Greetings to our new writers.
Best of luck on your work!
I have not been on the forum much of late due to preparing for a major move (that will happily allow me more access to civilization <laughing>), but I am looking forward to all the new works coming in.

Sikander

Re: Mary Renault's "Persian Boy"
Greetings,
Just a note to say how thoroughly I enjoyed this thread. That Mary Renault knew how to craft a story is evident when people are still deemed "the next Mary Renault' (though most fail the comparison in the end).

Re: Personality test.
Greetings Lysis, Thank you- I try to keep things in perspective and in the context of time, place, position, people, and opportunity. To me, that is the only way to study any person. If we focus too much on one aspect, we lose sight of the fact that many factors can come into play. No individual dev...

Re: Personality test.
Greetings, I think the biggest people have trying to "understand" Alexander is that they tend to perceive of him as "different" than other men, whereas he is understandable if one considers his actions from a simple human perspective. While I agree that most psychoanalysis is pro...

Re: Alexander's Discretion & Hephaistion
Greetings, Interesting discussion.. Good line, this: "Powerful, skilled and incorruptible. Truly a man to fear." And says much about the man in the context of his time and place. These men, and their interrelationships, are not difficult to understand when you consider they were powerful m...

Re: NEWLY PUBLISHED NOVEL ON ALEXANDER & HEPHAISTION
Greetings Lysis, Nicely handled. There are proven, published authors and writers who visit this site regularly; they are your best advisers. Most of them will offer constructive criticism even if they don't necessarily think your story will work. Hear them out, then, using their experience to your b...
