Re: Alexander as Achiles King
but could Alexander have withstood the loyalty of Achilles' Myrmidons / It would have been something he would have been jealous of. I have always wondered why Alexander was so taken by the Iliad. Now I understand that realities are so hard to swallow sometimes. That is why some people go to fiction...

Re: Hephaestion
You could watch the Oliver Stone Alexander movie if you're tired of reading. ;) I still love it. What is it in that Stone[d] movie about Hephaistion that may give anyone any notion about the man? Painted eyes? :D :D Hephaistion was the king's chief councelor and chief logistics officer. Not a frigh...

Re: Pella mosaic
The double-bladed axe is not an association of Hephaistos. Hephaistos's symbols are hammer and tongs, and a particular cap, sometimes a donkey. He's not shown with the double-bladed axe, which is specifically Minoan. But also THRACIAN . And that's a lot closer to home. ;) We find it's representatio...

Re: Pella mosaic
I don't think it's either one. Not sure why Waldemar thinks so.* This is a case of "looking for famous people in every image..." ;) Now, one can make a pretty decent case that the lion-hunt mosaic has Alexander in petasos (hat) on the left, and Krateros running up to save him on the right...

Re: Pella mosaic
Here's my guess *if* this portrays both A and H: The right figure looks younger than the left one, and the left figure has a larger physique, and really looks older (what of the furrowed brow and so on). So I think that, if Cassander did allow his townspeople to enjoy the company of those two very g...

Re: Alexander and sleeping habit
is there any evidence or lack of evidence behind ball-sleeping story is evidence for this conclusion? Hi there, Of course not! Lack of evidence doesn't mean anything, providing the story or anedocte looks possible  If lack of evidence was indeed that important, how many things would have t...

Re: Odd thing about the Mosaic
This battle depicts Gaugamela rather than Issus. Hephaestion would have been fighting beside Alexander at Issus certainly though as he may well have been appointed as a Bodyguard after Halicarnassus, and I believe at Gaugamela he was commanding the squadron of Alexander's bodyguard. He was definite...

Re: Similarity of the images of Alexander and Asklepios
Umm, both are holding something in the left hand... Could that be Alexander *as* Asklepios? You know, Alex was a botanist and there are stories about his dealing with medicinal/curing herbs, I hear (saffron and the like). Hee, what a guess!

Re: Frescoes suspected of Alexander the Great
Thank you so much for this interesting link. I ended up reading the whole article; I remember reading some of the stories in the past, but some were completely new (or maybe simply very well forgotten). You are right, both Afghan and Uzbek versions about Midan/Iskander are very similar, no doubt bo...

Odd thing about the Mosaic
Hello I was searching for the labrys thingy about the guy to the left in the Stag Hunt mosaic (someone said it is Hephaistion, because of the double-edge ax, which is an attribute for the god Hephaistos -- where this 'Hephaistion' name may have originated from, as the temple to this god is called He...

Re: Alexander Xmas quiz
Seasons Greetings! I tried the Hard Alexander the Great Quizz and I got 1st in alex's things! yay! And I got Olympias as character in the 'which character are you'. Not sure if I am content, but at least it is a woman, and it matches. Fun thing is that I never chose options with "power" or...
