Great information regarding what Greeks mean by xanthos or xanthe. I thought the mosaic was done well after Alexander's death? Does anyone know when that mosaic was done? I have a sterling silver pendant with the picture of Alexander and Bucephalus from that mosaic. I get so many compliments on it....

I believe Alexander crossed the Hellespont with galleys - rowing across the water. I suppose they were large enough to accomodate both men and horses. I can't recall any ancient sources saying how many ships there were, but there's always that story about Alexander throwing his spear upon the shore ...

Mary Renault's Alexander
Mary Renault's trilogy on Alexander the Great (Fire From Heaven, The Persian Boy, Funeral Games) is one of my favorite pieces of historical fiction. I've heard many people criticize the trilogy for being an overly romanticized portrait of Alexander. I was wondering what you all thought about the boo...

Welcome vasko! The Ancient Macedonian language is extremely hard to study, since there are no long pieces of surviving text. Without these texts, no one is quite sure what the language was like. A few words and phrases have been picked up, though, and I believe they were very closely related to Anci...

Giving was in Alexander's nature. He had no need for luxaries and pleasures. I don't think he gave away too much. Instead, this giving away might have caused the army to love him more. I enjoy your theory about the men refusing to go on because of such riches. I can certainly see some of the men wis...

I completely agree with both of you. Hephaestion was a major part of Alexander's life. Some even go to call him his alter ego. I would definitely say that the relationship that the two had was much stronger than the marriages and other love affairs. What Hephaestion and Alexander had is something se...

Order of Alexander the Great
I was browsing the web when I stumbled upon a society called "The Order of Alexander the Great". I'm afraid I have never heard of it before, and was wondering if I could get opinions on the order. Here's the URL: http://www.meaus.com/AlexanderOrder.html

Hi alex_z, The theory I know is that the Persians referred to their country as Iran for an extremely long time. Here some quotes from Wikipedia (which had the only complete explanation I could find): Starting from c. 600 BC, the Greeks began to use the name Persis for Cyrus the Great's empire. Persi...

Hi Theseus, I too have heard many stories on Alexander the Great's death. While poisoning was a popular story once (with Cassander, the mule's hoof, and all), it's somewhat been concluded that no poison known at the time would have caused such a high, continuous fever, and slow death. Though poison ...

Yet another idea of mine shot down. Don't worry, I enjoy learning. :) Anyway, I do believe that fair haired people were around for quite a long time. If you feel like reading about the first blondes (yes I've done some research!) here's an article: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article735...

I definitely believe Roxane wasn't an Indian, regardless of her hair color, and that there can be blonde Indians (this is pretty trivial). I've never really read much about Sogdiana's people, though. I don't recall any ancient texts describing the people, so I don't blame you for using Pliny's sourc...
