Conquering Bactria...

Alexander had great success defeating vast armies. But no conqueror ever really wins a guerrilla war. Alexander had to use diplomacy to control Bactria. Maybe Roxanne was the solution.

Wow, it looks like I started something...

Amyntoros, it's people like you that keep this forum interesting! I plan on revealing Dioxippus's origins in my sequel to PATRIDA. However, my friend, the true origins of this great Greek hero are unknown although a few theories abound. As for Greek slaves participating in the Olympics; rare but all...

Paralus said, "Tyre was his most famous siege, but, I doubt that the slaughter of some 6,000 after the city was taken and the crucifixion of two thousand Tyreans (along with the selling into slavery of the rest) will have done much for the cultural/brotherhood of man thesis." I agree. Alex...

I like your analysis Amyntoros. The hunt was a critical part of Macedonian male society but there isn't a whole lot of information on it. I agree that the painting is probably iconic as you could never get all those animals within a hundred meters of each other in the wild. As for Alexander, I too h...

What's it like there?

Australia is a beautiful country according to my friends who have lived and holidayed there and I want to make the trip one day. However, from this and other posts on other forums there appears to be a societal intensity we don't see in Canada. The rivalries between ethnic groups appear to be on the...

Guilty...

I confess, I bought the Director's Cut. The good: some events were better explained and made more sense; the bad: Alexander was way gayer. I haven't been a member of Pothos that long but I have been reading the posts for months. We couldn't ever agree on what type of movie to make and that's what ma...

Lion Hunt

Alexander is not wearing Persian dress in that mural. It is a short chiton (Greek tunic). The strapping of his sandals is also Greek and different than the persian version. Asian lions were considered extinct by about 100 AD in Europe so there were still plenty in Northern Greece and Asia Minor duri...

Alexander movie

I don't live in England but I sure would like to see the story of Robin Hood. As for Alexander what can I add that hasn't been said.Compared to a lot of other "historical" and "biographical" films, Stone's is practically a doctoral thesis. I've commented on the abysmal portrayal ...

reply to stavros

Stavros, you know your stuff. On Mas Oyama: one of the toughest to ever come out of Japan. He fought bulls with his bare hands and rumor has it that he even fought a bear the same way. His type of karate, Kyokushinkai, is probably the roughest Asian style next to Muay Thai there is. I used to compet...

Part of this site is devoted to books. I'm providing a link to a blog people might find interesting. You can excercise your right to not view it. Any book, particularly history or fictionalized history, is almost impossible to publicize. Attaching email addresses onto my signature is hardly aggressi...

You guys are pit bulls!

I commend all of you for your detective work and your scholarly analysis of what should have been an epic but was anything but. Historical inaccuracies are a pain but what bothered me the most was the blatant emasculation of Alexander. Colin Farrell came across as an effeminate weakling and the way ...

Ouch...

Poor Lane Fox. It appears that his legacy will be that film even though his book was written quite a few years ago. He may not be your choice but most in the know consider him an expert. I don't think anyone on this forum is being presumptuous in querying about Alexander's appearance. This is simple...
