Re: help with translation
There is an interesting article about the Laphria festival here http://books.openedition.org/pulg/1137?lang=en . It suggests that there was no large enough altar excavated at Calydon for the burning of live animals, and that the transfer of the Artemis Laphria image to the re-founded Patrae followin...

Re: help with translation
I don't know about the translation, but this is the Wikipedia link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laphria_(festival) . It sounds like a purification ritual, a bit like the Celtic spring festival of Beltane when animals were driven between or through fires to purify them before they were taken out to ...

Re: Rugger
It certainly is a standard, but it appears to be on the Persian side, so is it a Persian invention?

Re: Rugger
Thanks. Maybe accents played a part in recognising friend or foe too. There was probably a lot of shouting going on and Athenians made fun of Thebans I believe because they sounded like uncouth to them, and you'd certainly be able to tell whether the other bloke was Greek or Macedonian. Must have be...

Re: Rugger
Yes, a certain Pommie will be dancing tonight! Sport is very closely linked to war, as the ancient Greeks and the British Empire (sorry) knew. The BBC, as they usually do, showed the Trooping of the Colour today, which for anyone who does not know, is when certain regiments in the British Army parad...

Unfortunately it has been pushed out the spotlight a bit today by a certain tournament with a round ball ....

Re: Waxworks from Skopje
The waxworks were made in Russia and are on display in Skopje, the Republic of Macedonia. No idea on what they have based the portrait - presumably the available images of Alexander as there isn't anything else except mentions in texts. For me, this face is too fleshy and the expression too anxious....

Re: Alexander's plans for Arabia
I think the main reason for conquering Arabia was to secure the southern Persian Gulf coast to open up trade with India. The mouth of the Euphrates was still open to sea-going ships and would have brought trade into the heart of Persia. The conquest of Arabia had probably been planned since the marc...

How's your trip going, Delos? Glad you made it as far afield as Mieza. I thought you were going to spend too long in Delphi to see other places.

Re: The Sword of Alexander in the Batman vs Superman film
Xenophon, you appear to be missing the point. The fact was that you caused offense to at least three people on this thread with your dismissive and superior tone. ......only for those interested in the 'minutiae' of the subject and the usual various digressions. For readers generally, I can save the...
