About Lysias

Post by system1988 »

Here we are!

A rare find, a fragment of the first Parthenon (3 in total during history) that was build in 570-560 B.C. After its dissasemblement, many of its fragments were used in 5th BC as surfaces for engravings. This particular engraving reads: "Lysias is beautiful", "Lysias kalos" written in red, in the attic alphabet on mid 5th century B.C. The last two letters "O" and "Σ", have been written vertically.

The name was very common and it is impossible to identify it as belonging to someone famous at the time. Also unknown is the identity of his admirer. But at some point in time, this erotic engraving would have been clearly visible to the crowded Acropolis. And by the time the 3rd glorious Parthenon's construction works would have begun, it would still be there, a humble witness of human passion.
