Aristotle's estate in Chalcis

Post by adisciplus »

Definitely off-topic, but as this is the most active forum I've found on ancient Greece, here goes...

[Argument why it belongs in this forum.... Aristotle's life was wrapped up with Macedonian royalty. His father was physician to Alexander's grandfather, he was in the employ of Alexander's father and likely of Alexander.]

After Alexander's death, Athens proved hostile to those friendly with the Macedonian party. Aristotle was brought up on charges and forced to flee Athens in 323 BC. He retired to his mother's estate in Chalcis, Euboea when he fled.

Aristotle had inherited this estate from his mother, who had died when he was quite young. Based on inheritance laws, Aristotle must have been the closest living relative of his maternal grandfather. From this fact, we can conclude he did not travel to Chalcis to be with his family.

To choose the estate in Chalcis over his father's home in Stagira, where he likely would have been be well received, Aristotle must have visited Chalcis before 323.

Two questions:

What kind of an estate was this likely to be (e.g., a farm)?

When would he have first or how frequently would he have visited this estate?

PS If anyone knows other good + active forums on Ancient Greece, please post.
