"Not to mention long, languid scenes of grasshoppers on waving grass etc."That was definitely a legitimate complaint concerning "The Thin Red Line" but overall, it wasn't such a bad film. Too bad it came out at the same time as "Private Ryan".

I did a considerable amount of research and even started the work. (Last year I even did a research trip to view the ruins first hand.) Alas, I had to make a decision. It was to be one or the other, or I'd never get either one done. So, Jamestown was temporarily shelved in favor of knocking out the Alexander epic. Now that that is done, Jamestown hearkens and I ponder my willingness to push ahead with what may inevitably be as daunting a task as the Alexander project. There are definitely a few Greenisms in there that warmed me up a bit and whet the appetite for more. Ah, that familiar sharp compelling writing style. What a gift Green has, how fortunate we are to live in the era of such a master textual artist. For now though, I'm going to have to hold off on buying until I make up my mind on the events which will surely tie up my future for several more long years. later Nicator

Re: New Tomb Discovered In Greece
G'day Nicator.
To "come a cropper": to fall, stumble or generally stuff it up.
A HREF=" http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=cropper I assume these projects are novels? Whish I could write half as well as Green GÇô I'd knock one up myself. Judging by some of the stuff that's published, I may yet do a reasonable job. Certainly somewhat better maybe than Manfredi's romantic tosh wherein Alexander's homo-erotic relationship with Hephaestion (the most enduring of his life) is a subject avoided at all costs. Then again, with proliferating paperbacks busily popularising Alexander, I should likely look elsewhere for a subject. Philip maybe? Oh, oh GÇô there's already "Bloodline of Kings".I've got it GÇô the perfect choice! Now, if only Green will allow me to appropriate his section heading: "Alexander's Funeral Games"; with the tagline: "The bloody wars for Alexander's Empire"Got to be a best seller!Paralus.

Re: New Tomb Discovered In Greece
Hello Paralus,"I assume these projects are novels?" "The Epic of Alexander" is a 350+ page rhyming epic poem about Alexander. I have a trusted friend (a Texan living in Chicago, orginally from Norway)giving it a read at the moment. I've used Green, Arrian, Diodorus, Plutarch, Hammond, Fuller, Renault, and several others for my source material. It is not a novel, as I've made every attempt to make the work as factual as possible. "Whish I could write half as well as Green" From what I've seen, you write exceptionally well. I'd run people over en masse to read a book written by you, so by all means, make it happen! Your posts are a testament to your grasp of the material, a rare combination. If you don't do it, then you are wasting your talents. later Nicator

Re: New Tomb Discovered In Greece
Strike me bloody pink Nicator! It was a throwaway line - particularly the title.I don't believe anyone's written anything that complimentary about me since my last wedding anniversary card from my wife! I'm sure there are others here who must rile each time they see my name attached to a post!Maybe I should give it a go eh? Lord knows the new post on the site looks to be trolling ideas for a similar project. :-)Paralus

"I don't believe anyone's written anything that complimentary about me since my last wedding anniversary card from my wife! I'm sure there are others here who must rile each time they see my name attached to a post!"Don't you go getting all wilting eyed and sentimental on me! You must have a very nice wife to put up with someone who spends as much time as you do with his nose buried in an ancient history book. God bless her!!! For those slack-minded losers that "rile" when they read yours posts, I must say shut up or put up...evidently, they've shut up, (or more likely, no one seems to mind:). Your posts are informative and not scanty in detail. Your enthusiasm reminds me of days when I was all things Alexander and (some) of my friends couldn't wait for me to either quit the project or finish it. Somehow, today I'm not quite as rosy eyed about our hero. The reality of his conquests and brutality seem all too real to me, and the reasons for my head over heels enthrallment with such a leader is now somewhat tainted. I saved the difficult parts (the last couple of years of his life) to complete for the end. I knew that this period was more loaded with megalomania and perverse brutality. The slaughter of innocents, the purges, the alcoholism, the irreverance of his attitude towards those around him and the suffering that he both drove himself through and his followers. I finished the book just in time (before I lost heart) and shelved it until I could look at it again. I think, little by little, my mind is coming back to some center position on ATG. Soon enough, I'll be back in that enthusiastic saddle and rearing for more. In the meantime, yours posts have been a welcome shot in the arm (forgive the overused analogy). later Nicator

Greetings,I enjoyed your queries and questions. Green is not my favourite author, but I know many hold his work in esteem.I am not able to go into much detail at the moment (on
the road) but when i get back, I would like to get a thread going on some of your questions. I think people are leery of getting into the Greek/Macadonian thing because it all too often degenerates into modern nationalistic political distribes. But there is, I believe, room for discussion on the *past*.As to the language in the tomb, I believe that, once the papers are presented and discussed, there will probably more information forthcoming. You might want to try to connect to some of the people working on the project and tryt o query them.Regards,
Sikander
