Tim Spalding's Web Sites

Post by amyntoros »

Does anyone have a direct email address for Tim Spalding? If so, would you please send it to me by Private Message or email. I’ve tried contacting him via his email address on Librarything, but have received no response. (I don’t even know if he has time to read his Librarything email and/or if it is handled by one of his assistants.)

For weeks now I have received error pages when I’ve tried to access Tim’s ancient history sites. None of them seem to be functioning any more; not his Alexander the Great on the Web, his Ancient Library pages including the scanned Smith’s Dictionaries of the Ancient World, nor his Classical Wiki.

I know that he is enjoying huge success with Librarything.com, and I do love the site – I’m so disorganized that I would never have been able to catalogue my small library without it – but it does appear that Tim is either neglecting his other sites or is doing away with them altogether. It would be a tremendous loss if they were removed permanently from the web. There’s always a small chance that the problem could be at my end, although I’ve tried to link via two different computers, so I’ll list all my failed links below. Please let me know if you are able to successfully access any of these sites. If not, I need to contact Tim directly.

Many thanks in advance.

Best regards,
Amyntoros

All I can tell you is it is not a problem on your end...they are gone as far as I can tell, all of them. :(

I haven't tried the WCD for a while - while I was very involved in it from its inception, I rather lost interest when it started being invaded by spammers, and unfortunately, as Tim had already clearly lost interest, and did nothing about the problem, I didn't see the point in carrying on. The last time I looked at Isidore-of-Seville it was OK, although some of the links were obsolete.

Every time I tried to contact Tim I received no response. I'm afraid I became rather frustrated by his silence - rather rude, to be honest. It does seem as if he never reads any of his emails - or all his email addresses are out of date and he has no idea that people are trying to contact him; so I have to say that I'm not sure I'd spend too much time trying to track him down.

Marcus, I can see why you would be frustrated over the Classical Wiki because I know how much time you devoted to it in the beginning. Its loss, however, won’t affect me as much as the other sites. I can’t say that I used Tim’s Alexander the Great on the Web pages all that often, but they were a great resource for anyone newly researching Alexander. And I personally will be very upset if the Smith’s Dictionaries are gone for good. I passed on an exceedingly cheap copy the other day – and they are normally very expensive - because Tim had already put the book up on the web. The Dictionaries are wonderful resources for information on ancient times – I must have linked to them many times from Pothos. All those links are currently dead, of course. :(

I’m not quite ready to give up on this yet. Maybe I’ll give it another shot through his Librarything site.

Best regards,
Amyntoros

I had reason to check out the WCD link this morning, and it now appears to be working. I have literally just tried out Isidore-of-Seville, and that link's working perfectly, too.

Maybe just a temporary glitch, and I haven't tried out every link - but some at least seem to be OK now.

They are indeed all working now! Thanks for the heads up. :) I had written to Tim again and although I haven't heard from him perhaps he did see the email and "fix" the problem. (I wonder if it was a simple matter of paying the annual fee?)

Along the same lines - and this seems as good a place to put it as anywhere - the US Perseus web pages have been down for a few days. They posted a notice thus:
On April 3, 2007, Perseus hardware was compromised. In order to protect our data and comply with university policy, a number of servers were removed from the network, making Tufts-hosted Perseus sites inoperable. Repairs are in progress and we expect to complete them over the next week. We apologize for the inconvenience.
What kind of person finds it fun to "compromise" the Perseus servers? The same kind who consistently hack into the WCD, I suppose. . .

Best regards,
Amyntoros
