Re: Statue of Alexander as Achilles
Hi Marcus
'My contention with the Lysimachos/Phoinix story was that there was no reason to doubt its veracity, and that if Alexander's tutor chose to make the comparison when Al was still a child, that either formed his 'determination' to emulate Achilles throughout his life; or it affirmed his existing' determination.Giving that the narrative is acurate! How is it that we conclude that Alexander was *determined*, at this stage/let alone later life, to emulate Achilles?Anyhow! I think we leave the matter for another day, I'm sure this issue Achilles/Alexander will surface again. It's been an enjoyable thread, as usual; cheers!

Re: Statue of Alexander as Achilles
I'd love to answer that now, Smitty, but it's the end of the day and I'm too tired (easy cop out).I'm rather inspired now to do some proper research into this - including the sketch/statue that Linda Ann mentions. I can see this running and running. All the bestMarcus

Thanks, Linda, for the link. That is a great print. (an aside here making me think that Alexander has really had an effect on Colin Farrell):-)
Re: Alexander and Achilles
Hi John,That is an editorial opinion by Arrian, and means only that that is what he thinks. In fact, I believe that Alexander acts exactly the reverse or opposite of Achilles. Prime example, being the treatment of King Darius plus innumerable other examples as well. I noticed one author has made a point in the practice of sacrifices that while Achilles used humans for sacrifice, Alexander would use only animals. While one can compare the Iliad to Linus's blanket in Charlie Brown syndrom, I don't believe that Alexander did anything but exercise the use of his own mind regarding his practices. If it were tradition that caused him to cut his hair, then he followed tradition in mourning rather than simply pretending to be another Achilles.

Hi Smitty:Sorry so late with this reply. Once in a blue moon a copy of one of these etchings goes on sale on the web. If I ever see a decent image that's suitable for printing, I'll let you know. :-)Linda Ann
